HELP: engine heat after lighter fuse went

Post by huemedia »

HI ALL,

So....my lighter fuse went while plugging in a phone charger. This happened mid-transit and after about 20 min's I pulled over and replaced the fuse. Lighter works as it should but soon after the replacement my engine heat gauge started to show the engine heating up. I can get the engine to cool down by running my heater at full blast but this is obviously not ideal. Was thinking perhaps this could be due to a short in the fan or perhaps the temp. gauge. Wondering if there is a fuse in the engine compartment for the fan and if so where this fuse box is.

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Hugh

HI Hugh, Jay of the TardisDeli (who fixes a lot of the weird L300 electrical issues) says the fan has no fuse, just belf driven. If you think it is fused, then maybe previous owner did some aftermarket mod. I see you posted another post about sudenly losing power to one of the overhead window screens. Do you have any other dash lights fading on and off, wondering about alternator, or one of the fusible links, or bad battery, or bad ground from a loose wire somewhere? Where did you get your delica, did the seller do a reliable job on the headlights?

If you're getting temp overheat, do not drive, repeat do not drive. Most temp guages sit between one third to one half. If it goes over one half way up, then is overheating, thousands of dollars to rebuild engine.

Your profile has no info, so don't know if you're local. please update it. If you're in Burnaby area, stop by and visit Jay. Or if you're in Richmond, CVI Auto 604-247-0500. On the island its CC autos in Coombs.

Keep in touch, ask for more info, and give us more details, this whole forum is willing to help each other. Regards, Christine.

How does the engine temp gauge actually work? Off the 12V or does it not need a supply voltage to operate?

Just wondering if there are concerns that the alternator or ???? might be giving weird voltage levels, perhaps the engine temp gauge is suffering guilt by association and the engine itself is OK?

Does seem odd that a blown fuse would lead to the engine actually overheating...

Thanks for all of the info. Have chatted with Butch at CVI and am now informed the fan is belt driven so Im pretty sure its not the fan. Im beginning to think that this is related to to a bad Radiator as my van has never liked big mountain climbs in the summer. I think it might just be a big fluke that the fuse went at the same time. Anyways thanks for all of the comments and I will update my profile.

cheers
