I am partial to believeing all research went into the automatic transmission. YOu can only cruise at about 90kmh with the manual without risking damage to the motor and even that is pushing it. The auto cruises a bit faster and I have heard it is just great for pretty much every application.

And on the other hand, I really like driving standard. Probably the one aspect of the Deli that I like most is that you really strap it to your ass, as opposed to getting into it. I like driving. Shifting is part of driving so not shifting is not quite as much like driving.

I have to agree with you partially on that one Brett,
I am definitly also a shifter at heart as most of my past vehicular love affairs have been manuals , although, we love taking cross country camping trips with the kids every year.
Could I be happy with cruising speeds of 85-90 KMS?
Also, the misses would be driving alot while I work (out of the house)
-single car houshold- and she prefers auto,
still a tossup at this point, i dono...

I have an auto, and although I love the fact that I cruise at way lower RPM than all the standards out there, I will be getting a manual for my second Delica. The reason: for off roading, you don't have that automatic transmission rad low down in front of the one wheel... the less rad's that i bash off road the better! (Ask Adrock, he'd probably be out of commission by now if he had an auto!)

Yep, I agree. Automatics are faster than manuals. I made two adjustments to mitigate that fact. I put on slightly larger than stock tires, 30X9.5R15s and I carefully select destinations that are at the other end of really scenic roads. i.e. I just drive slower. I'm starting to like driving slower, at least in part because it gives me more opportunity to notice all the people pointing at my car and yelling "Cool Ride Dude!" . I can also be maddeningly sactimoniuos about "kids" driving 90 k/h down Pacific Avenue. It suits my sense of intelectual arogance. " To drive fast you need a foot but to drive well you need a brain." Oddly, this mind set does not stop me from driving down Pacific at 90 when the opportunity presents. I also think that a Delica is suited to highway driving the same way a Ford Town Car is suited to off-roading. If you want a highway car, automatic or not, a Delica isn't it.
This would be an obvious opportunity to lapse into endless aphorisms about the journey being the destination. I think instead though, I'll go make more coffee, then get under my car and find that squeek. Then I'm taking a car shopping neighbour for a test drive.

Well I took the plunge and bought a 92 exceed crystal roof with 103,000k.
$9800 with new brakes, tyres, water pump, timing belt and all new fluids.
Even came with that annoying little chime when you -exceed- 105kph.
Its dark green...or was it blue?? Pics are at maximum overdrive
And yes...its an automatic.
