So far, 2 Japanese coins and an audio cassette in the deck when I got the vehicle, but the deck didn't work and the tape tangled and broke when I removed it (home recorded, with Japanese writing on the label...)
There were also a couple unidentified wires that I have since disconnected and removed, and a set of air horns underneath... (those I have re-connected!)
That's about it... but I say so far, because I've had the vehicle since November and I only found the air horns this week... so who knows what else I have yet to discover...
Good question. I have found; coins, food wrappers, decals yet to be stuck on the window, a pop can half the size of our mini cans, small plastic toys, a bag of some kind of soup (liquid with chucks?), various 7-eleven wrappers including unopened 7-eleven chopsticks, and ice scrappers. The most interesting items I have kept are a lightly used fold picnic table under my rear seat () and a fold out shade the twists into a nice couple of loops, yet covers a side window.
All those little surprises make importing your own more fun.
I have an entire box of goodies with Tv`s , food , flares , ice scrapers , cushions , window shades , flares , radios , flares , ink pads , flares , 8 brand new cassete tapes of some Japanese guy , CD`s , flares , cup holders , spare trim pieces , and did I mention flares . My kids are going to have the best Canada day , instead of fireworks I`m gonna light me some flares and light up the neighbourhood !!!
well, I do of course have the flare, but that's factory equipment so I didn't mention it... (of course it's also 10 years expired....)
maybe I should have mentioned the cup-holder on the dash, it's aftermarket, but quite well attached.
I`ve got new flares , old flares , flares still in wrapping and no high mount brake light !!!! I`m not talking about the ones that come neatly screwed to the dash but ones found under the seat , in the centre console etc .
I found and old grocery receipt - at least it looks like a grocery receipt as my Japanese is still a little weak Pretty cool writing and soooo different from the western world set up. I told our dealer, Derek from Bonsai Motors in Campbell River, about it and he said he had found a road map and a video cassette of the movie Ghost, dubbed into Japanese in it. I'm keeping the receipt along with the auction sheet in Hazel's file for posterity. Haven't had her very long so I'm still hoping for a coin or something like that. Derek did a pretty thorough job cleaning her out though, so I'm not expecting much, but hey, ya never know!

I found some interesting, carefully folded scrolls wrapped in fabric, one that had an inscribed piece of wood. I am presuming they are good luck scrolls, but I'd be curious to get someone to translate their meaning.....
I found some tins of green tea, coins of course, receipts from 7-11 in japan, I think documents from an eye doctor.. and a snail on a spring. I realized the snail used to be on the dash so I put it back there. It is like a tiny bobblehead snail that bounces around as I drive, or bounces around crazily if I'm off-road.
Look or reach under your front seats if you haven't already, you will probably find some treasures.
A lovely paper fan in the mesh on the back of the driver's seat. And the mounting bracket, antenna, power supply and manual for a Casio LCD TV that was mounted perfectly for the driver. Too bad the TV was missing
Then a couple of weeks ago when I was having turn signal problems, I removed the glove compartment and found behind it an envelope and documents, all in Japanese except "Drivers emergency card" in English on the envelope. Think there might be a copy of the registration in there -- gotta find someone who can read Japanese.
"I could be just around the corner from heaven, or a mile from hell." -- Jackson Browne, "The road and the sky".
I got the original owners manual, maybe not an artifact, but a pretty cool thing to look at, even pretty easy to understand.
Also had what I think is the service history booklet, it's 100% Japanese and contains what looks like full inspection reports at 2 year intervals....interesting to see the mileage that was accumulated every 2 years....11-13000 km every 2 years within about 1500 km. Too bad I can't read it as it's likely a prettty detailed history of everything that was ever done to the van. At least it looks like it's complete and all the boxes are stamped, so I'm thinking I have one with a fairly good maintenance history....although I think most are anyways.
The paper fans and the scrolls are common amongst some exporters that place them in every vehicle I believe, I've seen a number of fans behind the visor. I'll bet some of them are snatched at some point in the post container process in Canada and taken home to the kids before the owner gets it. Those are usually the same agents that actually clean the vehicles before they leave Japan and remove the ciggy butts, chip wrappers and pop cans before they commit them to the container.
I've had the seats out, glove box out, carpets up, etc., and hardly found any dust bunnies. I was appreciative of the brand new ski rack still wrapped in plastic with all the accessories and instruction sheet that was in the vehicle, obviously the owner was not a skier but at least took the time to put it all back into the vehicle before he sent it to auction. In the long run I'll be replacing it with Yakima Hi Rise Towers and long crossbars, but in the meantime it's doing an adequate job of carring my Yakima Pod. I assume that all the Chamonix models originally came with a factory ski rack, is that correct?
