Delica Meet 2008

Post by Thomas Porter »

Because my schedule books up a year in advance, I'd like to know what's planned for next year's meet.
What does everyone think about Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise?
I would have liked to do the west coast thing, but a bit too far for us in Saskatchewan.
We'd go as far as Banff or Waterton National Parks though. You'd get all the AB and SK people there if we held it somewhere like that - more central.
I want a photo of my Deli parked by Moraine Lake or the Columbia Ice Fields.
Cheers,
Thomas Porter

best I can say is choose a date some people more local to you can do it and are willing to and then let everyone know what is happening. I don't know anything about the area so me organizing it wouldn't make much sense. couple hundred dollars worth of diesel might be pushing it but you'll never keep me away if i'm veggie by then.

If you have any questions i have limited experience with this organizing thing but i'll try to help, and feel free to ask any favors in this section as far as stickies and whatnot. i'm thinking of doing a big island meet near the end of summer, maybe coinciding with the northern boys going veggie at kevins place... if that is happening.

2008 meet

Post by Thomas Porter »

Alright then. Whose interested in going to Banff or Jasper for the 2008 meet? I'll book campsites and put together a trip itinerary if need be. Christ, I've organized enough stuff over the years, this should be a cakewalk.
The trip will have a lot of photo opportunities (as that is my vocation) and there will be some flyfishing (my hobbie). There will also be some fine scotch drinking, the odd cuban cigar, some acoustic guitar and harmonica music and fine cuisine (I like to cook exotic food while camping- a fetish).
Nudity will include, but not be limited to, me dancing on a picnic table to old Steppenwolf songs. Those in attendance will be required to convince hunters and conservation officers that I am not in fact the Sasquatch.
I will be bringing tools and equipment for doing a headlight leak fix and some other quick mods. I will also bring some nasty Saskatchewan homebrew for the more adventurous...
Let me know. I'm thinking late June or early July 2008.
If there is no interest by the end of July 2007, I will assume you west coast granola crunchers have bought too much weed to afford the fuel...

Leave that out and then it sounds perfect; gotta draw some lines. Vague, yet easy to define, lines are pretty easy for us west coast granola crunchers that don't have to pay for fuel. Well and the fact that I just can't handle too much Scotch any more, but have been looking for an excuse to crack a bottle of Talisker collecting dust in the pantry.

I am in for this, I love to fish.

I am in for this, minus the cigar since even the odd one makes me feel odd.

I am definately not in for this, even with alot of the fine scotch.

I am surely in for some homebrew, but even copious ammounts of this and I am still not in for the nudity, sorry.

Timing could be as early as May?

I think that for those of us who are west coast granola crunchers, affording the fuel is not a matter of buying too much weed, rather it would be a result of not selling enough   .

2008 Meet

Okay, no nudity...it's not really nudity anyway. I'm kindof hairy...right, no nudity.
May's a bit early I think, I'd like things to be dried up a bit with everything green. I want some skookum pictures of everyone's rigs in the height of summer bloom.
I do a lot of magazine photos and writing, this may be a cool story idea for Our Canada magazine or Canadian Geographic - escpecially if we have some Veggies there.
I like Talisker, Oban, The Dimple Pinch, Glenkinchie, Glenmorange ...almost anything with "Glen" in the name. Don't know who the guy was, but he must have been cool.
Oh yeah, I meant no offense to my "high-fibre ingesting, horticulturally gifted brethren from the Western shore...." I always enjoyed your parties at university.
First thing's first, we settle on a date. Then we decide who can come. After that, we figure out who can host what in terms of demonstrations/talks, etc. Then we look at activities - blah, blah, blah.
Christ, I'm even tired of hearing myself talk.
Let me know,
Thomas

I would definitely be up for a meet in the banff/jasper area... even if I can't get time off work I could still probably swing by for a day...

as for fuel to attend... speaking as someone who drives from Calgary to Vancouver about once a month, fuel's not that bad, suck it up and come have a good time! (and for those of you pointing out that I was not at the meet out west, it had nothing to do with fuel price and everything to do with work not giving me the time off :( )

That's one. Shepherd and I will be there. There's three.
I think Crushers would come too and Jungle Jon. Five.
Let have some more interest and we can get started on dates. The further ahead the better for everyone. Then we can start booking.
Isn't there somebody from Jasper too?
Hey Green1. What were your fuel costs to Van from Calgary? Curious.

that depends... I've only made the trip once so far in the Delica, and only one way, but it was about $100, so round trip would be about $200 (rounding all the numbers it's about $1/L for fuel, 10L/100km, 1000km total) (fuel economy is slightly worse than that, but the distance is slightly shorter)

Good to know.
I travel to Lethbridge about once a month from Prince Albert. It's about 900 km I'd guess. haven't done the trip yet in the Delica. Hope to see soon.
Still paranoid about that first big road trip...haven't gone more than 100 km in a jaunt yet.

Count me in... except for the dancing sasquatch part... <shivers>
I imagine my bottle of The Macallan will be gone by then, but plenty of time to find another yummy bottle.
Banff and/or Jasper would be cool, especially if we could convoy down the icefields parkway, stopping at the icefields, maybe getting a group pic beside a snowcoach. :D

I'll make this part of my trip to kimberley next summer as long as work allows. As for fuel milage... taking the crowsnest to kimberley is about 850-880 km, cant make it on just 2 tanks though, because i was using 4x4 on some of the snowy passes. I have the small single tank. 450 per usually, but I have had to fill up twice on the road, and make it with over 3/4 of a tank usually. Depending on the terrain your economy may suffer.

What a crazy world we life in, where a web discussion of a 2008 Mits Delica gathering creates within me a strong urge to have strong pull of malt!? Old Glen Moray is going to have his top removed right now! Only 5 fingers left right for now, thanks guys.

Cheers - literally,
Kev

That photo op idea was exactly what I was thinking. When I first laid eyes on a Delica, I thought it looked like a mini snow coach for the icefeilds.
Doing things in that Banff/Jasper/Kananaskis area will be really cool. We can go to the hot springs, take a gondola ride, go flyfish the Bow River...I'd even do a little whitewater rafting on the Kicking Horse. Did that once, super cool. There are some beautiful camp sites in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park.
My wife might even sign on if we do something like that. Any body bring their wife or girlfriend to the last meet? Did they have fun too? My wife thinks I'm a bit pathetic chatting about vans online all the time.
Back to the Banff thing - It'll make the tourists feel right at home seeing all the Delicas lined up on main street.
I know some great backroads/logging roads along the forestry trunk road from the Kananaskis to the Crowsnest Pass. Awesome camping, hiking, fishing opportunities in there. Some great 4x4 trails too.
I can even take you folks fishing for artic grayling and bull trout along that road. What are we at now, maybe six Delis that would come? I'd like a dozen if possible. That gives us some pull when it comes to getting deals at different places.
Cheers,
