After 7 continuous hours of -30C that killed my battery...
Had to buy a long extension cord to plug the block heater and left it plugged for 6 hours or so. Then I tried to boost the battery with my wife's little Kia Rio but I'm not sure if I was doing it right as I wasn't able to start the van. Eventually called AMA and they took the van to my house. Is still outside, but at least close to home now.
How are you supposed to boost the battery? Any special instructions? And which one of the 2 do you connect (My Deli has 2 batteries), does it matter? I tried the one on the right, and I assumed connecting any battery would do the trick but we gave up after a few minutes.
Now I'm planning to buy a battery charger and give it another try over the weekend when it's supposed to warm up to a nice and warm -5C. Would it be better to buy a couple of new batteries?
Any advice on how to do this?
Thx,
Fabio,

I would expect you would connect to the + and - battery terminals on the running car, and to the + terminal and then to a clean grounded metal spot on the engine of the deli. Aren't the two + battery posts connected? shouldn't matter which one then.
Even jump starting didn't help with mine in -30, it just wouldn't fire. Switched to 0w40 synthetic and filled up with better diesel + winter additive and it starts up nice in -30 now
in calgary it's probably worthwhile getting a couple good batteries. A pair of deep cycle or sprial cell, etc.

When boosting a battery it is not so much about the voltage as it is about the amperage. When I first got the Miss Lil' Bitchi, the batteries that came with her had the voltage but when we ran the stereo for 40 odd minutes without engine running she would not start. This is when I discovered amperage. The diesel has heavy compression and requires more amperage to crank her over. Jay (TardisDeli) has pointed out to me that whatever jump leads you use, they have to be big enough to be able to carry the amperage for the diesel as opposed to jumping a petrol engine (less compression in gasoline engines). He has just installed a wonderful plug-in that is heavy duty cable and ties directly to the battery so he can now give a boost or take a boost without having to life the seat

i think you hook up the booster cables to - on one and + on the other battery.

i had a flat battery the other day after returning from two weeks away. couldn't get the deli to crank fast enough to start it off another running car. it was like -10 so the charger wasn't really doing anything soon. I took the battery into the inlaws house where we had left her, put it in a sink full of warm water to warm it up so i could get it to even take a charge and hooked up the charger. got it back to life in 3 houres. I think outside i would have waited forever before the thing would've charged at -10
don't know if that helps...
