We finally found what we were looking for after more than two years of head to wall venting of the usual frustrations faced when trying to find perfection in such an imperfect world. When we first met over 13 years ago, we both had a fond liking for the old die hard 72 Westy parked behind the shop, rusty and neglected, but proud nonetheless. Against all odds we drove it from one ocean to the other in an attempt to "get a life" in another timezone with new surroundings. It worked. Over a decade later we found ourselves in search of something we'd been lacking in our lives...a cool ride.
We completed a long arduous trip from hell and back with a few scars in our memories and alot of missed callings from our familiar friend...The Wild. We bit off a huge chunk of the hardest taffy to ever twist around a stick and we chewed it until every drop was gone. Now we could relax a bit, and search for the rewards.
My wife decided upon a Delica, as it not only offered the cool factor we missed from days gone past...but it also filled a few other needs that were perhaps, like it or not, above the need for coolness. She chose a diesel after researching more environmentally sound ways to accommodate the need for transportation coupled with our want for a capable ride with space for all we do. A Delica kept floating to the top of the list.
Sure, we looked at Toyota's for awhile. After hearing/reading the same complaints rather consistently, we opted to look at a Delica a li'l closer. We liked what we saw. We struck a deal with Dave and Shogo (http://www.japanoid.com) and found ourselves being lead to our soon to be new bestest pal...the Delica. The entire experience with Japanoid was flawless and felt right. I'd recommend them to anyone looking to buy a Japan import through a dealer you can trust to find what you want.
We've had the van for a few weeks now. Loving it in a BIG way. We went from a Ford Escort wagon that nearly broke my back each time getting into or out of this butt-dragging heap of @#$%...I didn't like it. Period.
The Delica offers me enough head room to wear my huge hat on my huge head...enough leg room to kick off my mukluks and relax a bit, and all the options I need within easy reach...I like it. I am 6'4" (on a good day) and far from lanky. I don't have as much shoulder room up front as I'd like for a cross Canada tour, but found the middle and rear seats quite accommodating for me to get settled. I could travel in the center row of seats anytime for any distance I'm sure. The trade offs are worth it. If a bit of tight shoulder room is my worst complaint, I'm really not doing so bad. Great fuel economy, fantastic condition, diesel, all power options, high roof, 4x4...yeah, I can live with a bit of tight shoulder space.
I have ordered a Nissan Safari for myself (also through Japanoid), but must say that for my wife's commuter/general purpose vehicle I think she made a great choice in her Delica. I hope she enjoys it for many years to come. She deserves it.
For the record, it's a 92 exceed with a high roof (not crystal roof) and a stainless ladder up the back. We have all the power options and second row cap'n chairs. A roof rack is on order. It's dark green on top with light gold bottom, and of course white bush guards all around.
We picked up the Delica on a Friday morning. When we went to pick it up, my wife says to me, "You're going to have to drive this home ya know." She was nervous about right hand drive. We test drove the Delica and upon arriving back at Japanoid to sign the papers, she told me there was no way in hell I was going to be driving her baby home...lol...She signed the dotted line and from then on we were Delicanagan bound!
Since arriving in the Okanagan with her Delica, we suddenly noticed a few more around town. Funny how that works. We still stand firm on our opinion that we started it all here. NOBODY had one 'til we got one! ;) Buncha copy-cats!
Cheers all...and Happy New Year from the Sunny Delicanagan Valley!

Cheers and welcome to the club. I'm still in heaven after 6 months and wondering when the novelty will wear off. Went up Cypress Mountain with the family today + friends - major snow fall - no problems up or down and confident and comfortable all the way. No other domestically available vehicle out there that can perform the way my deli did today with a full load of people and still get 25 mpg......smiles all around. I also now respect the high roof even better as a number of people used the deli as a changing room - in and out of wet winter clothes. Will flash the highs if we meet in the OK - visit Penticton & OK falls regularly.
Peace to you & all in 2008.
