Our Delica's Service History?

Post by iDelica »

This is our first Delica, it's a 91" Super Exceed from B.C. The family we bought it from did not keep the service records from the previous owner - we didn't know that until we picked it up. With a VIN# is it possible to get service information? We are from Portland and ran a CARFAX but since it's a Canadian vehicle nothing came up.

Here's a pic of our Deli!

Welcome to Delica Canada :M

Nice wagon. Here are a few ideas: Beside the driver's seat, between the seat and the door in the vinyl moulding is a little hatch with a finger hole. Remove that hatch and under it you should see a number that looks like P35W-XXXXXXX. This is the vehicle's chassis number or VIN. The P refers to the new model; the 3 refers to your wagon's high roof (as apposed to the low or "aero" roof like my wagon's in the picture below, which would be identified by a 2); the 5 refers to diesel and the W stands for "wagon" or people carrier as opposed to V which stands for "van" or cargo carrier. The other seven numbers are the actual identification numbers of your wagon.

Go to the board index of this club website, scroll down to "Delica Canada Technical" and in the first line you will see "FAQ & Technical Reference Libraries", click on Delica FAQ Section subforum. The first topic is "Useful Links for Vehicle Part Identification Purposes." Click on that. Scroll down to the second post, JDM Online Catalogue, click on that and enter your VIN into the Mitsubishi field, enter. What will come up is the original information about your wagon, i.e.; the day she rolled off the assembly line, the original codes and all the OEM stock part numbers that she came with.

Regarding your wagon's service history, look for decals on the wagon. Canadian history will have stickers like "CVI" or "RSI" that will be put on the exterior rear or sometimes on the tool deck under the front passenger seat. For the Canadian shops they will have a record that will require the VIN and/or the previous owner's surname.

Regarding the Japanese history: The decals will likely be found in the driver's side door jamb or on that tool deck under the front passenger seat and will look like "Wakos". I don't know if anyone has tried to contact the the Japanese shops or whether they would still keep records from the nineties ~ if they do I'd think your only option would be the VIN and I would expect the Japanese shops to understand English.

One thing I will say, these wagons were for the most part idolized in Japan and for the most part were well looked after, they were typically weekend wagons and a bit of a status symbol. I have spoken with friends whom either lived in Japan or are Japanese who confirm this. On the tailgate windscreen should be a round decal, this is the parking license. You don't get a car in Japan unless you have this decal, it means you have a place to park the wagon. No casual street parking like in North America. My wagon, Misu Komusume, came with a complete service history, of which I have elected to keep. Not every Delica came with one but many did.

Falco.

P.S.: Get to know this website. Delica FAQ Section has many items of interest, as does the "L300 Dedicated Category Reference Forum". Hope this gets you started and we hope to hear more from you. Happy trails... smiles.

Hi Falco!

Thanks so much for your response! There is so much great information on this site. We are so excited to get moving in our rig:)
We weren't able to get our VIN# information to get a response online - perhaps we are inputting it wrong. Does this look right to you: 2BG705316W0110862??

Thanks so much,
s.

P.S Your rig looks great!

What Falco says about these vans in Japan must be true. I have a friend in Toronto who's currently dating a Japanese girl. She's quite lovely, and when I met her for the first time she immediately commented (in her very broken English) on my van. It went something like this:

Delrica big big car in Japan. Get out of my way!! Like Hummer vehicle here..... Big status symbol over in Japan!!

Anyway, her insight on cars from Japan & Canada is pretty neat. Whenever she gets homesick, I take her for a ride in my Deli.....

Have fun with your new rig. its awesome!!!

Ya, we understand the 25 year law, the van was built in March of 91' and is currently registered in Canada, we will wait a year before we bring the Delica down to Oregon.

Ohh! A Crystal Lite, I'm jealous.
If you're not sure of service history, it may be worth spending the $$'s and having some things done either way (I say this as a guy that works at a motorcycle shop). That way you know when they were done and can start regular maintenance accordingly.

Some things will be mileage related (Fluid changes, timing belts, etc.), Others, just because they are worn out. Some here may correct me but allot of Deli owners do their own service. Good luck finding that info.

Tons of great info here, but I personally keep it as stock as possible and have a great mech.

Enjoy your wheels.

Thanks! Ya the open sky roof is nice, it was at the top of the list during the search for our Delica. I agree whole heartily about keeping it stock, any time I have modified vehicles it seems to fix one problem, and create 2 new problems.

Who do you take your van to Shaun?

ATEB in Burnaby as recommended by the previous owner of the van. Great guys, friendly and they know diesels. Plus it's a 5 min. walk to my work so easy drop off/pick up.

That is not a Japanese chassis number, perhaps it is an American one that has been added. As I said, your wagon is a P35W, your VIN is going to be that number, followed by seven other numbers. Did you find the little hatch I was talking about? On the right of the driver's seat. If your American number is located under that hatch (roughly one inch wide by three or four inches long), the original chassis number will be underneath it and will look a little like this:
  • Image

Another place to look for vehicle identification is between your legs when you sit in the driver's seat.

There's a post by Mystery Machine in the Delica FAQ Section (from which these images are borrowed) called "L300 Vehicle Identification". Have a gander at it and it should be helpful to you.

As for the original VIN, unless it's been grinded out, it's pressed right into the frame.

Falco.

P.S.: Thanks for the compliment, I've recently been giving her a little love. Trying out a new oil with a graphene additive and doing some serious detailing!
