L300 Alternator Replacement- Stuck in Osoyoos

Post by robro »

After reading other posts from owners who have had van troubles in the Okanogan I am wondering if Osoyoos is a bit of a black hole for Delicas. My alternator died in Oroville, Washington and had to be towed to OK Tire in Osoyoos. Neil is the owner and claims he has worked on a couple of Delicas in the past so I am waiting to see how things turn out. A 90 amp re-built is being shipped out from Vancouver this week to replace the re/re I had put in three months ago.

My questions are as follows: should I have my belt tension and installation checked once I get the van back to Vancouver, and secondly, are L300 alternators so vulnerable that you run the risk of killing them after draining 3 month old batteries (as I stupidly did after leaving the doors open for hours while camping near Lake Osoyoos). I would expect a re-built alternator to have more guts to it. There was enough juice to turn the engine over the day the alternator died so I guess it must be a problem with the re-build I bought. I hope I am not repeating the same mistake.

Finally, if I have success with OK Tire I will post a recommendation providing workmanship is good.

It is a pretty basic and generic job for a mechanic to replace an alternator so I wouldn't be worried.

alternator should last longer then that....

LED interior lights I could camp 2 weeks with using them and still get a good start (dual 900amp batteries)...
