alright, so if a common rail 4d56u is 178hp (according to wikipedia), and is the next gen 4d56T, with a DOHC head and different injection system, what are the chances the head assembly would bolt right up to a standard 4d56T block? ive been doing some reading and it just has me wondering. of course you would have to convert the IP as well, but is that at all possible? or is it a totally different block we are dealing with? a whole new engine with a lot more power would be sweet, but spendy, so I am daydreaming ways around it haha

You can get the 4d56u (aka Triton engine) for about $2750 as a reconditioned motor, shipping not included. I have also found a place that sells just the bare head for $1000, but then you would need to buy all the additional parts for the head. You can find the head on eBay as well, for around $1000.
According to Wikipedia, and a bunch of posts over on delicaclub.com, it is all the same engine block, just a different head/fuel/intake system. So you would need all the added electronics as well. Getting all the appropriate electronics would be a pain in the ass, but worth it.

To make that feasible is to buy a doner vehicle cheap and start swapping components. You would need wiring harnesses, relays, ECU, and have to figure out how to splice all those with the Delica. If block was the same you would be best to swap whole motor across keeping the old Delica engine mounts. You would still have to fab up stuff for exhaust and custom intake. Throttle connections, coolant connections, fuel connections would likely be different. Having shoehorned a Suby engine into a Westy, I found out how much work a non-stock engine retrofit really is, and why shops charge 6 grand for the privilege.
Personally I would be wary of trying to get 178 hp out of a block originally designed for less than 100. I wonder if they didn't beef up the later generation models.

even if it is the same block, it could be slightyl different material composition, which would probably be very priveleged information not available to the public.
