Howes is one of many in the line up of diesel conditioners (counters sulfur and winter gelling) that the 2 stroke oil will not do.

Jeez thanks Jesse , I am actually quite familiar with the Howes line of fuel conditioners .

My question was more directed at why is he is adding an anti gelling additive to winter diesel that already has gelling inhibitors? And if the 2-stroke oil is taking care of the lubricity deficiencies, why waste money putting Howes in the tank? Save that for the Summer months.

Good point - I'm under the impression that the Howes was a cetane improver as well as a lubricant.

To be honest, I started using the 2-stroke oil just to try it out, but the primary reason I'm running it now is that it seems to improve my winter MPG. I plan to stop using it once they return to summer diesel blend and just use Howes.

So I guess I view my "normal" fuel as pump diesel plus Howes, with 2-stroke oil added as well in the winter to improve my mileage.

I'm not quitting Howes only because I'm not completely sure what else it does; might be overkill to use it in addition to 2-stroke oil but the incremental cost of an oz. of Howes is not a real concern to me. I don't want to mess up the results I'm so far getting this winter.

Maybe my brain's gone soft like a melon - I'm just tellin'...

Tony, why don't you try running a few tanks without the Howes but with the 2-stroke. It would be a good experiment to see if the Howes really does help in the winter. The 2-stroke is well proven, maybe a slight boost from the Howes helps, maybe it hurts..... Let's find out.

Have you noticed a difference in any way when you add the Howes vs. without?

As for cetane, I see this is only an issue if your engine is running rough and possible pre-detonation is occurring since the increase in cetane level increases the pressure needed to detonate the diesel.

Depending on which product you're using from Howes, it is also an anti gelling agent. But winter diesel is usually good down to the -30*C range before any gelling starts and only REALLY needs to be added below that. There is nothing wrong with adding it before that temperature as a preventative measure, but if most of your driving is in the Vancouver area, it may be overkill.

Don't get me wrong Tony, I'm not trying to get you to stop using it, just trying to determine if there is real benefit in doubling the dose per tank. I too do things that may not be necessary or overkill, just so I feel better about my due diligence. I'm more looking for information than a debate.

I wouldn't be afraid to pull the Howes from the treatment if you didn't notice a difference, the 2-stroke is providing sufficient lubrication with the side benefit of improved MPG. My Dad drives logging & Hwy trucks and has for longer than I've been on this planet, he has tried almost every additive and in every temperature range that BC can throw at us. He swears by running 2-stroke as the additive of choice unless it gets REALLY cold and then he adds the Howes anti-gel. That's all I run now is the 2-stroke (or should I say my wife adds it since she stole my van ).

Bought a 945ml bottle of IPA and added approx. 750ml of the IPA today once the fuel gauge was on low.
Took it for a good drive to Horseshoe Bay and back to Main St. in North Van.
Filled up and added the usual 2 stroke and diesel additive
Engine sounds as if it may be idling smoother.
I will be gentle on this tank of gas and update my observations for all.
