More powerfull engine - Imagine...

Post by fexlboi »

...you can get 150hp out of the engine in a l300.

What else would you need to change on it to make it an reliable, long lasting and safe car?

We know from GeryO's experience the auto tranny doesn't hold up, but apparently a 5spd would? Why?

Any modification to the drivetrain, differentials, etc? Which other parts wouldn't hold up?

Just thinking out loud 8-)

I was going to go the way of the 150hp L300 engine. But true to form I talked a lot to a lot of people about going this route as opposed to a new bigger engine. Here's the conclusion I came up with.

If you add 70% more horse power to a engine and drive train not built for it you will undoubtedly have problems. So you will be changing other bits as well just by default so budget more $$$$. In addition what will burn more fuel?
A little engine working at 150% of capacity most of the time, or a big engine working at 50% capacity (except for those really muddy spots!!!!!!).
This is why I have ultimately choosen to go with a bigger engine. Cost will be about the same with what I expect to be an increase in reliablity and a reduction in fuel burn (as opposed the in built up stock l300 engine)

But that's just my 2 cents

Weak links going with larger wheels/tires (larger/heavier rolling mass) and larger turbo/more fuel/more air :

- CV axles (limited articulation - weak)
- small tie rods (weak)
- rear driveshaft (too short)
- Indirect injection (not efficient for power) / alu head (overheat easily)
- auto trans - will need a monster oil cooler to keep it from overheating
- gearing - 4.875 not the best mated with the small 2.5 for large tires

I agree super

Depends on the total weight.

I think if you add a intercooler to the 2.5L you can make better safe power.

5 speed shifted lightly will handle the extra power if the van is light.

Superexceed is going to be heavy plus turning more parts.

But your van kept light you could get some more power and your tall narrow wheels are fine. It is all in how you drive it for breaking parts. If you hop up the motor and side step the clutch things will break. If you are easy on the right foot it should be fine with a 5 speed (add the pan strengthening plate). Increasing the oil cooler would not be a bad idea given the place you are going and extra engine oil would be a bonus!

I would like to swap a L400 motor in to an L300 to lose the timing belt.

It's all hypothetical anyway as I'm not planning to do that. Just interested in general.

Super Exceeded your case is special. I was thinking of a stock Delica without any mods. No added weight, big tires and extra axle.
As thedjjack said I wouldn't increase the total weight of the van, neither would I start pushing it like crazy. My driving style is very conservative. Fuel economy shouldn't change much unless you push the fuel management to the limit or drive like a race car.

I'm not very familiar with an auto tranny. Why would a 5spd hold up better?

thedjjack what do you mean with the van kept light? Like empty as it is right now or not exceeding the max gross vehicle weight?

this could explain his problem with owning a "short bus" and the need to lengthen his "bus"? :-D

He put an Skyline intercooler in her, and put 33" wheels on her (big lift) and consequently blew the transmission. He rebuilt the tranny, thinking that he had just an old tranny that was on it's last legs, as it were, but then he blew that one, too. At which point it occurred to him that the tranny was the weak link in the drive train because of the added weight of the 33" wheels, so he rebuilt it again, this time bolstering it up and everything is fine.

Here's a link I found when I put "intercooler" into the search field and "Garyo" into the author field:

Too bad, would make for a good article. I believe I was talking with him at the time when he told me about how he overcame the transmission issue.

Doesn't the pajero have the same transmission as the delica with the 2.5? They are intercooled and have more power. Maybe its the weight its pushing?

I think the issue was the 33" wheels, I mean those things are huge. I have been toying with getting a 4D56 Paj inter-cooler but I would still keep my LT235/75R15s.
