Gear sets. 5 Speed?
Hi all, I'm on the lookout for front and rear gearsets for my Auto L300. After adding the larger tires, she's pretty boggy and gutless. Plus, I want to get a trailer and as it is, it just won't tow well. So, I think if anyone has a wrecked 5 speed Deli or Pajero I would be interested in the gears.
Also, if anyone knows of other vehicles with the same diffs, please let me know. Thanks.

Re: Gear sets. 5 Speed?
I think he wants to change the axle gear ratios, not the transmissions
(are the autos and the 5 speeds different I thought it was just a difference in the transmission overdrive ratios).

4.875 = auto differential gear ratio (front/rear)
5.29 = manual/5-spd differential gear ratio (front/rear)
The 5.29's are sought after by the US Montero market as they are excellent for low/4x4ing and are a perfect gear ratio matched with 31-33" tires

I've heard that the Auto's give you about 15% more power than the 5 speed but as jfarsangs signature shows, 80% of statistics are made up on the spot.

Just the opposite. I have turtle (5spd L300 with 31's) tuned so well that I can accelerate up the cut like our L400. With Granola (carbon copy of Turtle's mech setup) I couldn't keep the speed up.
The 5.29's in the 5spd's are killer gears. You just need larger tires to make it cruise nicely on the highway.

Re: Gear sets. 5 Speed?
My 5 speed came with 4.785 gears it is the overdrive ratio that is different for the rpm difference on the highway with the 5 speed vs the automatic.
I am basing this on the VIN plate under the drivers seat which is coded for a 5 speed with 4.785 gear ratio. (mine is an early 1989 Delica).

91+ 5spd's majority come with 5.29's
You have one of the rare select few 5spd's with the 4.875 diff ratio gears

Re: Gear sets. 5 Speed?
It still turns 3000+ rpm at 100km/h with 31 under it! 4th and 5th are too close.

Re: Gear sets. 5 Speed?
Are you taking into consideration the difference at the speedo ?
I'm running 2,850 at 100km/hr
If you're doing 100 on your speedo, you're in reality going 109/110km/hr with 31" tires

Re: Gear sets. 5 Speed?
Interesting, I just inquired about a gearset from a parts 5speed and they said it's 4.875. How can you check by VIN what the diffs are?jfarsang wrote:91+ 5spd's majority come with 5.29's

Re: Gear sets. 5 Speed?
What year is it ? It's the first after 92' that I would hear of 4.875's in the 5spd diff's.
Try Mardy or Glen. I think they both have 3rd members out.

Re: Gear sets. 5 Speed?
Thats 100km/h on a GPS unit.
I think there may have been 2 different 5 speeds used....I need to craw under a few more 5 speeds.
On the plate with the manufacturing info it has the gear ratio listed. Under the drivers seat.
