2,8L fuel consumption

Just filed up my third full tank.

First tank gave me 13,41 L/100 km
Second tank gave me 14,02 L/100 km ...I little bit more than I expected, consider I got 9,6 L/100 km in my first Pajero (manual as well but 2,5 L engine...)

I put K&N air filter and full synthetic Shell Rotella 5W40...

What is your results, guys?

Injection pump seal / timing / injectors is around 500 to 700 depending on which shop you go to. I recommend Amazing Auto or CVI.

jfarsang - What did you do to the timing? What is it out, meaning you went back to stock or did you alter it? And regarding the injector cleaning - you're talking having them pulled out and cleaned correct?

The injectors are removed, disassembled, cleaned, new washers installed and crack pressures adjusted for proper spray pattern and the reinstalled.

My timing was retarded, as many JDM diesels are coming from Japan. It needed adjusting.

I'm averaging about 10.8l/100km (over 28 fills in 5 months). Best I got was 10.239 and worst was 11.252. Good portion of my driving is hwy though (and I don't always speed )! I did install a K&N filter (no significant difference in mileage) and use 5w50 Blu synthetic oil. I do have a pyro installed and generally don't go over 700 deg F (occasionally to 800 up to Whistler on those hills) and cruise around 500 deg F. 31" tires.

Have you been up the coquihalla with it yet? What kind of temps does it see hitting the hills after the tollbooth? I've been reluctant to put a pyro in, but would like to know how hot it will run if you step into it. (maybe an L400 driver can pipe in)

It started around 10-11L/100kms on stock tires mostly highway, to as bad as 15.5L/100km all city on 33's with the fueling out and dirty injectors. Recently I did some tuning with the fueling, advanced the injection pump timing, TPS and kickdown adjustment with all new oil and filters and was getting as low as 10.2L/100kms average over a couple tanks to Calgary. (not bad for climbing) The way back was much worse at 12.5L/100kms, but that was doing an average speed closer to 120, not 80-90 due to poor conditions.

"advanced the injection pump timing" - is this a lot of work and how far to advance it?
To jfarsang: Is this the timing change you were referring too?

"TPS and kickdown adjustment" - what does this mean?

Have not been up Coq yet... but it's coming. I know the long hill up to Whistler from Squamish I don't go much over 85km/hr at about 800 degrees. That's really my capping point up a hill. Get pretty good mileage when I do those trips (10.5-10.8l/100km). My worst ones are doing 110-115km/hr on the i5 to Seattle.

The best thing you can do is put a pyro in your truck. As it has been said several times before it changes the way you drive! I put it in when I blanked off the EGR (blank kit from someone here and I can't remember who). If I really step into it on a hill (blowing smoke etc) I can get over 1000 degrees easy (which I think is very high, others may feel different). I'd like to see some others numbers as well (including the l400 people).

Next step for me is a boost gauge, coolant and oil temp.
