Post by Spade J »

I may not understand fully how manual hub works, but what do it benefit to have one on L400 with Super Select?

Unlocked - wheels are freewheeling - Superselect / 2WD / AWD (4H) / 4WD high (4HLc) / 4WD low (4HLlc) will not work. You will be constantly in 2WD and shifting between the 2-4WD modes will do nothing.

Locked - hubs are locked - Superselect (as above) works just like stock (with the permanent locked flanges)

Two benefits on the L400 with manual hubs -

1. hubs unlocked - you can put it into 4HLlc (4WD low) going down a very steep hill making a sharp turn easily, whereas with the hubs locked, making a very sharp/angled turn in 4WD low puts a lot of strain on the front running gear.

2. hubs unlocked - while driving in 2WD on the road - only the hub is turning as the vehicle is moving. Not the CV shaft/axles, so less wear components over time.

Will it possible to manipulate switch sensor to keep freewheeling clutch (lays beside front differential) unlocked when you shift to 4WD(H/HLC/LLC) without getting out of van to unlock hub?

This idea does not comply with the definition of a manual hub. :M

Sorry I was very vague about that part, what I mean is "fool" free wheeling clutch thinking that transfer case is on 2H but actually it is on 4LLC meaning you will have low gear RWD without manual hub.

Will that work? or I might have wrong concept of free wheeling clutch.

4LLC/Free Wheeling Clutch unlocked
CD = 50/50 torque
Rear Differential 50 torque, 100 traction unless one of wheel lifted in air.
Right Front 50 torque, 0 traction (free wheeling) therefore Left have 100 traction but 0 torque due to front differential

It is controlled via vacuum solenoids.

If you disable the solenoids, then you disable the clutch. I wouldn't mess with the system though. Its quite perfect.
