Hi;
My battery has gone flat. I charged it, started the engine and tested the output of the alternator using a voltmetre. There was no change in readings between running and not running. My experience is that the alternator should put out roughly 14 volts.
I'm looking for the easy way of removing the alternator. Any information would be most welcome. Thanks, James

Re: Charging problem
Hey James,
There is no easy way to replace the alternator, it is a contortionists job. Disconnect the battery, then remove the drivers seat and the panel under the e-brake handle. This gives you much better access and light. On top of the alternator is the tension bolt. Slack of the belt tension. I found a ratcheting wrench with a head that bends 90 degrees is easiest. Then undo the bolt on the bottom of the alternator. Disconnect the wires, and the oil lines to the vacuum pump (oil will spill out) and pull out the bolt and the alternator can be wrestled out. Don't drop it on yor teeth. Most auto electric shops can rebuild them with a new voltage regulator for about $100 bucks. The regulators are easily available. To see some picture of the alternator, see this thread:

Have fun.

Re: Charging problem
I don't suppose you have any suggestions on how to get at the tensioning bolt on the alternator without the complete disassemble do you? My belts are a bit loose, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get at that bolt to tighten them!

Re: Charging problem
There is a small hole through the drivers inner fender area that with a little patience and a good 1/4" u-joint you can reach the end of the adjuster . Also helps if your engine mounts are in good shape so as the engine sits higher .

Re: Charging problem
Glenn beat me to it, that is where the flex head on the wrench is really handy.
