how to re-sponge-y window seals

Post by delica 304 »

I think that was pretty clear, I noticed that my rear pop outs have been leaking, and the seals are good and compressed. Is there any way to restore them to their original poofyness?

I haven't seen much about "re-poofing" them, however I've been told that dielectric grease will help seal them a bit better... alternatively (though likely more expensively) any of the usual importers that frequent this site should be able to find you new seals.

For reconditioning rubber I use "Rubber Renue" Made by MG Chemicals.

I know its good because it smells alluring and the label says it will kill you in seconds...

Same stuff we use here in the naval dockyard. I agree with DeliTan: if they're that concerned with your health, you know it's going to work. A lot of those wimpy 'green' products out there today just don't seem to work as well. :?

im assuming this procedure will work on the door seal as well? if its raining hard i get a river on my right shoulder. iv tried siliconing because i thought the rubber was peeling off, but i think its also lost its spongeness.

the same stuff should work on door seals as on window seals, it's the same material.
The doors do have one other issue sometimes though, they tend to "sag" a bit, and therefore don't always seal as well as they could, playing with the latching bar or the hinge bolts can sometimes go a long way.

Good stuff; basically 80% Xylene (hardcore solvent):

You are esentially removing the outer layer of rubber to expose fresh stuff underneath. Just wipe off the excess - make sure you don't let the stuff pool around rubber for too long, or you will have no seals left at all!
