A Non Delica Question

Post by kpdelica »

Since this is the best place for info on JDM vehicles. I was wondering if anyone knew if a RHD 3L gasoline Toyota Hilux would use all the same parts (including the engine) as a 4runner of the same year?

Thanks alot.

You'd have a lot more chance finding aswers on this site: www.ih8mud.com
But I'd doubt the 4Runner would be running the 3L diesel?

Good luck!

Not the same as the 4Runner no, but most parts will crossover to some older Toyota's. What specifically were you wondering about as far as parts ? Filters, suspension, etc ??

I was looking at a 1992 3L gas hilux surf and wondering since it was gas and not diesel if it is the same engine as what would be in a 4runner of the same year. Thanks for the help and I will look at the linnk posted above.

hi, there is no 3L gas, i think you mean 3L is the diesel one. as for the gas model surf there is only 2 tyrp 12R or the other 6cyl v6 gas on it.
its same as we got it here. but 12R is very difficult to get in canada & us.
hope this help

Thanks, Mardy

The ad I was looking at said V6 (3 lit). I assumed that meant 3L.

I took this from wikipedia concerning the types of engines in the the Hilux

"It was available with a range of diesel engines, including a 2.4 L turbodiesel I4 up to 1993, followed by a 3.0 L turbodiesel I4. Small numbers were also made with a normally aspirated 2.8 L diesels and 2.0 L I4 naturally-aspirated petrol engines. The majority of petrol versions having the 3.0 L V6."

I'm not sure if this is correct, but now I am more confused than when I started.

According to the the 4Runner wiki-page, there were only two years that a 3 litre engine was available. All the remaining years were 2.4 litre (gas or diesel), with a few years at the beginning with a 2 litre (that must have been a dog).

There is probably some similarity between the models, but you might want to check the other forums for more current information. Not a lot of 4Runners/Hilux on this site, although we are willing to help (as we can). A better match might be the Toyota pickup of the day.

Good luck.

the V6 gas is a Pig.

Its horrible on Gas.. I brought a couple in, and everyone complains about them sucking the gas back..

I wouldnt recomend the Gas..

go with the 3.0L Diesel..

I looked at dropping a Hilux engine into my 1989 4Runner, and I am very familiar with 4Runners. Many of the parts are directly compatible with the Hilux to the 4Runners - however, it depends on the specific part. For example, I put a driver side grab handle on my LHD 4Runner because the screw holes for the handle are on both sides as the truck body in my 4Runner is identical to they Hilux. I also put a few extraneous parts from a Hilux on my 4Runner such as my clinometer.

I do agree with the other posters though, only buy the 3.0 L gas engine if you have money to burn. Also, pay close attention to the head gaskets. The 3.0 L had issues with that - (And I seized the engine in my 22re with a head gasket failure )
