How cool is your Cool Box?

I just got my Deli last week so I haven't had much time to fool around with the Cool Box, but it doesn't seem to be getting cool, even with the AC cranked. The AC seems to be working OK, so I'm wondering if there is something blocking the Cool Box AC feed.

How long does it take to get a cool temp in there on a warm day, and how cold does it really get? I did read one post that mentioned a mini ice cubed tray in there, but that seems like a huge stretch for my unit.

There was also a post mentioning an AC recharge would help with the cool box. How much does that cost? I guess it might be worth it if the poor functioning Cool Box is just a symptom of a weak AC system.

The cool box will make ice in the "ice" setting... or at least it should... (the ice cube tray fits in the compartment on the passenger side of the box under the controls accessed from inside the box)

the first time I tried the cool box and the AC everything worked beautifully... when I tried it yesterday however the AC was MARGINALLY colder than outside air (but only just...) and the cool box, even on the "ice" setting was actually warming up, it did a better job off!

I think I need a recharge.... anyone know if I need any special "delica" parts for the conversion to north american refrigerant? or if any AC shop "should" be able to do the job (after they get over the placement of the steering wheel...)

I asked my mechanic about a recharge and she said I have to find out what kind of refridgerant is in it .
The older stuff has a different molecule size and has some diffent fittings that "may" need to be changed.
In north america they changed the type of refridgerant in the early 90's to a more earth friendly one.
So..... does anyone know how to test for or find out what type they were using in Japan?

In 30 minutes of driving my beer went from luke warm to frosty cool. I think your coolbox needs some TLc.

Hey Adam , how is the dash cold ?? If the charge is a little low in the system it will still be working but not over effective . If the dash air is not cold give me a call and I`ll set up a `top up` . I have a friend with some R12 supply and also a drop in replacement . Call me at the shop if it needs work . There will be no charge to you , just your van !!! Thanks Glen

Thanks Glenn, I might take you up on that offer. I just got back from a family road trip to Victoria and the Cool Box seemed to be getting cooler, but I think making ice in there is still out of the question. The dash AC moderately cool, but not cold.

Just got the AC recharged, thanks Glen. The dash AC seems to be a lot cooler. Still not sure how the cool box is supposed to make ice. It is getting cool, but not freezer cold. Don't get me wrong, I don't really want to make ice in my Cool Box. I can't imagine a more inefficient use of diesel. Just to be clear, when the Cool Box is set to Ice you still have to have the AC button pushed in, correct? Do you have to have the dash fan running as well?

well depends what you're doing, on a long highway trip in the summer you wouldn't even be able to measure the extra diesel needed, and the convenience would be great.

The cool box needs to be set to "ice" and the part that gets cold enough is the part under the left side of the coolbox behind the slide up panel.

That would be nice, I was under the impression that using the AC could reduce your mileage by up to a 1/3. Hopefully my fuel consumption will only be a big issue for next few weeks until I get a WVO system installed. Then I can use the AC in the van to cool down the house :lol:

On the highway using the A/C is more efficient than opening the windows (windows cause excessive drag at highway speeds). There is a reduction in fuel economy, but it is nowhere near 1/3, I personally have never been able to measure the difference as it would appear to be less than the normal variance you get from how heavy your foot is or how strong the headwind.

Just took my Deli on a trip to Vic yesterday. My cool box doesn't seem to get cold either. How does it work? I know that you have to have the AC on, but do you need the fan running? I noticed that with AC on and the fan running, the cool box fan would come on after 10-15 minutes. If the AC fan was left off, the cool box fan didn't seem to work. Is this normal? I also noticed that the AC was cool, but not cold.....

Does anyone know where I can get a gasket seal for the cool box?

I think Mythbusters had an episode about AC vs open windows.... AC wins in most cases....

4 wheel drive on the other hand absolutely murders my fuel economy.

IF you are using 4x and AC, don't blame the AC.

I had the mothership's (North American GM, see avatar) refrigerant replaced a couple of years ago. The car is a 1991, so used the old "unfriendly" freon. The mechanic used a replacement refrigerant that is friendly, but does NOT require any vehicle mods. Now that's for a NAmerican vehicle, but I would think that in 91 the delis would have used the same stuff, and the same would apply.

Does anyone know how the Hot fuction on the cool box works? Do you just put it to the Hot position and wait?

the hot function requires you to have the heat on in the van (just as the cold function requires the AC)

I have the original gasket for mine (though it is no longer attached to the coolbox...

) I'll probably glue it back on... but I'm not sure what glue will attach foam to metal in a reliable way...

as for replacing it... that foam weather strip stuff they sell at most hardware stores should do the trick nicely I'd think...
