$100 HID euro-spot lights

These aren't fog lights. They are offroad distance spot/flood lights and are an addition to the stock fog's. I run both fog and spot.

The stock fogs on the delica's both L300/400's are good for lighting up the road when it's foggy. Amber is the best color.

Oh, I see. I mis-understood that you swapped them out and plugged the spots in where the fogs had been. I like the idea of both; except for the additional wiring I'd have to run etc. I'm still trying to figure the best place to route the thermocouple wire for my pyrometer and wiring for its display.

This is an addition I'd really like to make but I just can't see a proper place to locate them on my L400 that wouldn't leave them way too vulnerable to damage.
The space between the two fogs would be a possibility except the grill in back makes it too shallow; same on the outside.
Any ideas?

Actually, the more I think about it more I think I might be better off just converting my headlights to HID instead of adding spots. I'm not into any radical off-road stuff anyway, just the occasional logging road...

I understood only headlights that were designed for HIDS could take HIB bulbs. I see a lot of cars around here with HID upgrades and they are defiantly not for those cars. Even with low beam the light is intense and scatters everywhere. Now also they could be installed wrong but that would mean a lot of those are installed wrong.

Not sure about the law, and not sure I care, but I ordered an HID system before my 400 arrived. I installed them the first week and noticed that they were adjusted way out. (Sorry to everyone I blinded that nite!) Not sure if the originals were adjusted wrong but it could be that the new bulbs sit differently. Anyway, once adjusted (easy), they are awesome. Because they were so cheap, I'm thinking of replacing the high beams too...

I dare anyone to not dim when oncoming then... Can you say Retina Rippers!?!

It is technically illegal to put HID bulbs in any housing that wasn't originally designed for them...

HID bulbs are also best used in projector lights (like the L300 low beams, not like the L400 bulbs at all)

As for a place to mount the HID spot lights... I'm thinking the 4 inch ones would possibly fit on top of the plastic on the bull-bar in the "carry handle" that I have up there, if not, I would slide my fog lights inboard a bit (like jfarsang's are) and mount the 7 inch ones where the fogs are now, as long as they have the protectors on them I'm sure they'd be fine.

I'll have a closer look and see if maybe the "grill" material behind the fogs can be removed without mangling it. Green1, could you explain what you mean by "carry handle"? I don't see anything like that on my L400. As for the legality aspect; that's a good point. Not only that but I hate it when other drivers disregard oncoming traffic and blast them with eye burners. It's not only totally inconsiderate but dangerous to boot.

I took the term from the UK site, for lack of any other description... my L400 has an extra piece of plastic above the bull-bar, it currently has 2 projector lights mounted in it, I suspect there would be room for the 4 inch HIDs there too, if you don't have that "handle" (which is a rare addition) then you can simply mount the lights directly on top of the plastic "mitsubishi" surround.

nope, those are illegal. you'll see those kits advertised all over the place, and despite being pretty generic, they'll usually quote models they can be put in (in fact some will try to list every car ever built in their ad to hopefully get some search engine traffic)
The law does not allow modifying compliant lights to include anything not originally part of the fixture, so removing the intended bulb and putting in the HID ones is illegal. That said, many people do it anyway, and in projector fixtures (like the L300 low beams) it's not a big deal, because the aim of the projectors is so specific that you won't likely be blinding anyone anyway, but in simple reflector housings (like the L400) the light tends to end up places where it's not supposed to be aimed, which not only adds to the illegality, it also pisses off oncoming traffic.

These are legal, however I'm not sure I want to spend that sort of money. Especially considering that the actual compliant L400 headlights seem to be really amazing, I've been very impressed with them, and have no desire to replace any part of them.

I've taken your word (and photos) for it and picked up the last pair of 4" from Shucks Lynden. They had only a single 7" on the shelf.
Actually, Shucks have been bought out by "O'Reilly Auto Parts" (along with Checker and some others) and are in the middle of changing things around. Of course the price was higher ($116. ea. USD) than what you paid but I'm sure I'll be happy with them, especially since my recent headlight black-out fiasco. BTW, I asked for these by part # because I didn't see them on the shelf. The system said they had 'em but it took the guy about 10 minutes to find them hidden somewhere in the back. It pays to ask!
