x2
You don't want to go more than 3.75" backspacing on a 15x7 or 15x8 rim.
15x7 @ 3.75" backspacing will push it out right to the body edge where it should be. If you go further out, then you are setting yourself up to have fun explaining to the police why your tires are sticking out without a flare or mud guard. I've been through it and having gov inspections re-issued because of that little inconvenience is not too much fun.
Look for 15x7 chevy/toyo rims.

You'd never know it judging by the sheer quantity of ridiculously jacked up (and chromed, of course) F-350's cruising around here with way oversized tires that stick WAAAAAAY out past the flares (which are also huge!) with nary a mudflap in sight...jfarsang wrote:...15x7 @ 3.75" backspacing will push it out right to the body edge where it should be. Re: wheel offset so tires stick out more...
amazingly enough I found the RCMP in Alberta this week pulling over all sorts of pickup trucks for lack of mud-flaps... I was amazed... and a little impressed to be honest...
but all that aside, adding flares and flaps isn't impossible either, and it only makes sense if you're trying to get a wider stance.

I love it! That's got to be one of my biggest pet peeves is pick-ups with no mud flaps - I figured they should be manditory to even sell a pick up, but I swear I've seen so many brand new Fords,etc... with no mud flaps passing me on the trans canada, and me holding my breath waiting for a big stone to crack the deli's windshield....

Re: wheel offset so tires stick out more...
I am looking at a 30-day notice that I received by a nice police officer last week for the tires sticking out past the body on my L400. I have until then to deal with it, new tires, flares, anything and go down to the station and show it to them. If not, I get a ticket issued and a summons down the road.jwfchase wrote:You'd never know it judging by the sheer quantity of ridiculously jacked up (and chromed, of course) F-350's cruising around here with way oversized tires that stick WAAAAAAY out past the flares (which are also huge!) with nary a mudflap in sight...jfarsang wrote:...15x7 @ 3.75" backspacing will push it out right to the body edge where it should be. Policeman was nice and I was expecting the ticket. He said better now than off while I'm on vacation somewhere in the boonies.
They only stick out maybe 1-1.5 inches max.
Just because you see others do it, doesn't mean they aren't getting pulled over for it.

Re: wheel offset so tires stick out more...
Think of it this way, flares just got more affordable by the amount of the possible ticket
Did you offset your tires, or are your tires just that wide?

Re: wheel offset so tires stick out more...
The axle hub to hub width on the L400's both front and rear are wider than the L300's in stock form. Bigger, longer axles, etc...
The same tires/wheels on my L300 were flush with the body. On the L400, they stick out 1.5" inches at least because of the wider track.
The wheels I have on there now are 15x8 3.75" backspacing which is actually just right for Montero/Pajero's with the factory body flares.
They are also pretty much bang on with the L400 factory flares.
I just need to find a set in the next few weeks.

Re: wheel offset so tires stick out more...
alright im pretty sure the guy thats selling me his wheels thinks there jeep but clearly aren't because there 6 stud and not 5. anyways he only has 4, i was wondering how super bad it would be to have 3 tires with offset and one that isn't (of course im talking about if i were to get a flat and had to use my spare). im assuming this would royal screw the steering?
what the average price to rim and tire and balance it?

probably not too bad, look that the space saver spares in most cars, smaller diameter and width, if you flat the front and are worried about the steering, you could swap the spare to the back (though that would take a while unless you have a jack stand ot 2 jacks in the van)
