EGR removal kit

Greetings faithful viewers,

Here is a little kit that I picked up from ebay.uk,

The plates are very well cut, the blanking hose and the spare nuts and bolts are a nice touch too! not bad for twenty pounds (UK scooby bucks) Supposedly the end result is less black smoke, and lower engine temp.

Mararmeisto dropped by and between the two of us, some beers, a dropped iphone (mine) and a lot of jaw wagging, we were able to pull this from under the Landmaster:


I did have to enlarge the holes on the exhaust manifold plate, but the was what? Ten seconds with a drill? they were just a hair off, and wouldn't clear the bolts.

Unlike most kits that only block off part of the EGR system, this one allows you to completely remove the EGR valve from the engine!

So once it was installed, it was time for a test drive!

Despite my best efforts, I couldn't produce a big, glorious cloud of smoke (I guess my days of smoke- bombing convertibles are over! ), the engine does appear to run cooler, I will have to keep an eye on that for long term.

hell I have access to a TON of scrap metal and the tools to make that stuff, I think I will throw one together and see how it looks. might have to make a bunch :)

...and, as mentioned elsewhere on this site, provides a perfect spot to install a pyrometer temp sensor in the manifold.

So once it was installed, it was time for a test drive!

If you had a baseline for fuel consumption, then please do report back in this thread later as to whether or not it changed.

Fuel consumption shouldn't change much, but engine temperature should decrease.

Will report after I change mine.

If I remember right, the EGR is only open when the engine is cold. Once it warms up, the EGR valve is supposed to close. So wouldn't the temperature remain the same. And fuel consumption would be insignificantly changed?

Agree on the consumption, but I think my EGR is stuck open (as is frequently cited on MDOCUK).

I'm looking to see a decrease in engine temperature and smoking.

the EGR valve, when working properly, is a good thing to have, the catch is that they can (over 15 years) get gummed up a bit and get jammed open.
The best sollution is to clean the EGR.

Another option is the blanking plate, however after reading many reviews on the UK site, it appears that a Delica with a blanked EGR has worse performance and fuel economy than a Delica with a properly operating one. (a blanked out one is much better than a gummed up one though)

conclusion:
Blanking works if you're just looking for a quick and easy fix, but you're really better to just clean the thing, they may not be essential components, but the van was designed with them in mind.
