Help - Front Axle Bushings
Hello,
I need to replace the front axle mounting bushings on my van now, I think there are three of em. Last time I had a different shop change many different suspension bushings on hers including those one's, and they are a bigger shop with a parts counter and internet. Now I want to support my buddies new shop, and he is gung ho to work on imports but I need to do the part sourcing. Which is OK with the savings involved.
Anybody else replace these? Anybody have any occasional clunking noises coming from there front end well driving at slow speeds over bumps? Anybody have a part number for those bushings? I have had two Delica's now with these bushing in bad shape. Please and thank you. :D :D
Best Regards,
Kev - think I'll take a picture today of the offending part.

I too get a clunking in my front right side, mostly when accelerating from a stop with my wheel turned a bit. I split my front right side yesterday to try to track down where the clunk was coming from, but I couldn't find anything worn or loose. Please post some pics if and when you find the offending part, it would be very appreciated.
I am also waiting for my rear sway bars to come in from Glenn, giving me a clunking in the rear. I could say I drive a '91 'clunker', but it looks way too nice to call it that.

These bushings? They were the ones I changed when my front end was clunking... anyhow if it is, then this details the parts and repair. Super simple.

Nope, but thanks Josh. Changing those sway arm bushings in one of those mandatory needs of a newly arrived Deli; torsion bars, wet floor fix, DRL, etc. One of the support bushings of my front axle is just gone (really gone, no rubber left at all) and the others are cracked. There are three for the front axle and two for the tranny/transfer case, I think. Have had the five replaced in our first Deli, along with I few other odd'n'end's suspension wise.
Will try and order something tomorrow.
Cheers,
Kev

Hello,
Well my Deli was done last week, but not until this afternoon has a smooth riding front end. Front wheel bearings were cooked to a golden brown one side, so we replaced both sides. They are BR50 inner and outer bearings, which were in stock in our little burg. I don't have a part number for the front axle bushing's, but they were an off the self item. Still with the clunk, clunk on the front end. My mechanic suggested replacing the front steering assembly, big bucks!! I talked to Glen, ccauto, this afternoon and he suggested cleaning up and tightening the front bolts holding up the lower suspension assembly. WOW, less then 10 minutes later, and still haven't touched the front bolt on the drivers side, presto; no more noise under my Delica. I'm so happy, not having to buy a new steer assembly too. If Glen wasn't a ferry ride away he'd be the only one I'd let touch my Delica.
Thanks Glen!
Fuel pump is dry now that I'm running WVO again, not one drop droped last week.
On a side note, my mechanic just stripped the head of a LC Prado with 77,000 km for a leaking head gasket (a 2.4L I believe - 2L-TE). I think it's a case of odometer roll back me thinks, the head is cracked and unbelievably pitted. Water pump hose mounting areas are just about pitted all the way through the castings, and have signs of old repairs. The turbo is so rusty I would have guess it sat at the bottom of the ocean for a few years. My van has 80,000km and looks like a new vehicle underneath compared to this LC.
Cheers,
Kev

Surprising they're weak heads, that 2.4l motor is a beast; cast iron head and block. Bigger then the Deli's 2.5. Ellis guessed the head weighed in at almost 50 pounds. I noted the motor type 2L-TE, wonder if that's the same block in Hiace's and Surf's. I thought of crusher, and thought of taking pictures of that disassembled junk the was a Toyota. I would guess he's definitely been there, seen that.
James, I know you baby your Delica, and don't push it on the rough stuff - but I'd really recommend checking those bolts I mentioned.
And any pictures of the dental mods, did they work out fine?

Hey Kevin,
Thanks for the info on the bolts, I'll crawl under there when changing the oil this weekend. What makes you think my baby has ever been pushed, its almost always has 4 wheels on the ground
I had a Toy HJ60 that blew its head, not cheap, of course that was the 2H six cylinder diesel. The head on that brute was about 150 lb, took two techs to get it in place.
The first fix of the teeth look good, but one of them has died and I need a root canal and cap on it. Just saving pennies that could be used for WVO for the rotten teeth. Oh well.

Re: Help - Front Axle Bushings
I have been trying to find an intermittent clunking sound from my front end and have done lots of searching and reading under clunking and front end. I would like to try to tighten the frame bolts but I cannot seem to figure out where these bolts are actually located. I have looked at this picture lots and I have tried to compare it to the front axle downloads that I have but I cannot figure out where they are located. I was wondering if someone could orient me eg looking forward, up down etc. Or orient me on the axle download picture. Also is the bolt in question the one in the center of the above picture? Thanks for all the info posted here and I appreciate all the efforts of people who contribute to this board.

Re: Help - Front Axle Bushings
If you look at the picture your seeing the upper bump stop to the left (did you cut yours down?), these four bolts hang the front end off the frame and don't appear on the front axle PDF (I think, I looked also 3 years ago). If you have a gander under your Delica, I think the nut pictured is the rear left one, you will see it. Can't remember if the front bolts need the bash plate removed.
