on top of the battery there is a 100A fuse, but I think that's for the alternator rather than the starter... there's got to be something, but I'm really not sure what or where...

It's a pain, but you may have to trace the wire to see where it goes...

Do you put petrol in your diesel to winterize it?

In the Haynes manual for the pajero " up to 30% petrol "

In the UK i use up to 10% petrol

Was going to start a new topic, but I might as well tag on to this one. I am having the same issues here in a -25-30 coldsnap. I had a block heater installed in Vancouver before I got my Deli.. I have always had my suspicions whether they intalled a proper frost plug block heater or some other contraption. I just finally found what they did... A small 600W heater tagged onto my rad hose, in a very hard to get to spot.... It has definitely stopped heating altogether, as my van only starts now with a lot of coaxing with a shop heater pointed on the motor, and a battery charger hooked up.. I am frustrated, because its only one year old. I've bought a circulating heating heater that is meant to attach to a 5/8 heater hose anywhere low on the system near the engine block... Does anyone have a good spot where I have relatively easy access to cut a hose and splice this unit to??? Please advise me, as I really need to get some warmth to that motor.. I've also just replaced glow plugs, battery, added battery blanket, and am going to change the oil.... When I first started to have issues, the starter would crank for an insanely long time before the motor would catch at all. Is there a danger in burning out the starter doing this multiple mornings?? I also saw the smoke rising from the solenoid connection..... How do you tell if if it is damaged??? Any advice at this point is greatly appreciated....... Another side note.... My deli has always cranked out the heat in the cab... After ten minutes of idling, its toasty warm.. During this bout of hard starts, the engine temp did not rise above the first tick on the gauge after an hour of highway driving. I stuck some cardboard in front of the rad, and it seemed to help quite abit, but I now worry about the thermostat. How could this be related to all of this.... Thanks....

this sounds like what I was experiencing, in fact looking at the connection it was glowing red hot. Get a wrench on it, most likely the connection is just slightly loose, it's wasting a lot of your precious electricity to heat instead of to starting. After I tightened mine up the smoke stopped and the engine turns over much better!

As for the heater... can't help you much there, but I know that with a normal frost-plug style block heater ($25 part, $200+ labour) these things do get warm enough to start, even at -25 (and I'm talking a van that doesn't start well at +10!)

Glen can you tell me the size of fusible link that is used for the glow plugs? It is in the harness over top of the batteries. Checked mine and i need to get a new one.

Hey Wolfgang, I got my glowplugs through West end mittsi here in edmonton. Give them the part number ( from this site ) and they can get them in. Cost me $130.

In an earlier post I wrote "genuine Mitsubishi glow plugs. For pre-1994 Delicas, the part number is MD092392 (green top). Available at any Mitsu dealer, especially if you don't mention what they are for." I also posted the torque specs. I know it's a bit late, but oh well.

twisted, i burned out one of those wires about a year ago,
the frame of the vehicle had rubbed through where the volt reg connects to the alt underneat.

Problem solved!!! Replaced the fusible link and things are working. I also put in a fuel addittive and raised the cetain level and she starts better now.
