Pyro and Boost gauge - what kind and where did you mount 'em

I'm starting to look into getting a pyrometer and boost gauge for our Delica. I tried searching for various terms on the forum and was unable to find answers...other than the importance of having a pyrometer and boost gauge

My questions are:

1. What boost range and pyrometer range should I be getting?
Up to 1600 degrees F for the pyro and 30in. hg. to 20 psi for the boost gauge?

2. Where are you mounting your gauges? Got any photos? Are there any A-pillar 2 gauge pods available for the Delica?

3. Out of curiosity, what kind of guages are you running (brand and model). I like the Autometer Sport-Comp 2 1/16" boost guage and Air/Fuel mixture gauges in my Celica, so I'll probably stick with that series for the Delica. Gotta have the "elicas" match, you know.

Thanks for the link, Profister. That's an option that I'll have to keep in mind. I imagine my Delica driving habits would change too if I knew what that little bit more/less throttle would do to my exhaust temperatures!

I haven't mounted my boost gauge yet, it's just sitting where the stereo should be, but I got it at Princess Auto for $14 or $16 on sale and it's been working great. There's a button on it that lets you choose what colour the illumination is via an RGB LED. I still need an oil temp gauge for the veggie oil, but I'm waiting for them to be on sale again.

This is what I did for a pyro. I put a gauge on temporarily while I was adjusting the boost, but didn't permanently mount one. Check out this post for a pic.

I don't have boost gauge, but I've seen my pyrometer up to 1500 F.

My gauge is mounted on the steering wheel. I moved it to left-of-centre to avoid blocking the 4wd light. The Delica is at the garage getting an oil change, so I can't tell you the name, but it is a major brand. I'd recognize it if I heard it, but can't think of it right now.

Edit: I also put a hood on it so I don't get reflections off the windshield right at eye level.

I'm just in the process of installing my gauges, I don't have pictures yet but I removed the outside/ inside temp gauge from my stock triple gauge pod and installed a digital pyro, Im mounting my boost gauge on the left side of the dash on the angled piece of dash next to the gauge pod. Im also mounting the gauge panel on an angle pointed towards the driver, still waiting for my boost gauge i will post pics as soon as everything is done.

now the hardest part, i have to find a new place for my hula girl :(

Nice placement of your pyro gauge, Erebus. A buddy of mine has his boost gauge mounted about there in his JDM RX7 with this really slick looking mount that makes it look like it was stock from the factory that way.

Taynton, I'd love to see photos of your guage set up when you're finished with it. I need all the gauge mounting ideas I can get. Hopefully Santa will deliver some guages for our Deli

Are you putting in a round digital ? I was heading out to Mopac tomorrow to look a old school style - I still like round full sweep. I havent measured yet , but it looks like the in/out temp and altimeter are 2 1/16 . I was hoping to mount it in the pod where the altimeter is. I dont need a gauge to tell me how high I am. My son said to check the VW sites (TDI Club) . They seem to have a few ideas too. I wanted pillar post mount, but Deli pillars are damn skinny (Jimmy Walker thin) I'll post some pics

That set up looks really sharp. I'd be happy with the 3 pods gauge on it's own... it's been on my to do list for a while but all in good time! Was the fit pretty straight forward for the gauges in the pod or did it need some trimming? And what are you hiding above your hand throttle? Time to rest those bikes for a bit and start playing on the Delica again! See ya soon!

garyo, that set up looks great! I always wondered how aftermarket gauges would look in a pod like that. What size Autometer gauges did you go with? 2 1/16" (52.4mm)?

More pyrometer shots..

Also added a volt gauge and an oil pressure gauge.
The digital gauge is a glow shift boost and pryrometer combo gauge. The outer ring dislapys a pie shaped bar graph and the inner section is digital.

On the pyrometer usage seeing that i am shure that not all members will be familiar wth the device.
It is simply the best way to tell how hard the engine is working, as it measuers the exhaust gas temperature.
The higher the temp of the exhaust gas the more work the engine is doing... or almost.. as with any turbo engine a sweet spot will be achived with boost pressure. Lack of Rpm .. and there for boost will cause the engine to lug and at that point it is posible to overwork the engine and have excessivly high pyrometer temperatures.
Excessive pyrometer temps can result is burnt exhaust valves and warped cylinder heads.
In BC with our old vans this can be a real problem as lost of our highways have significant grades!
So when you have high pyrometer temperatures either down shift or if you already have downshifted back off on the throttle.

On our engines i think the max pyro temp should be around 1250F. As that is what we set the alarms on the ships at.. Maby Glen or Mardy can chime in to tell us the absolute max.

Considering most pillar pods available here are going to be for left-hand drive vehicles, you will probably have to search online for either a Japanese or British-sourced one. Good luck, and let us know what you find.

Now someone has to figure out which one would work best. Hope it isn't the Focus one, it's twice the price of the rest.

Hmmm, the grab handle might get in the way of a double or triple. Would sure like to have some in hand to try the fit. Hey, is anyone planning a trip to California we can task with checking it out????
