Trailer Wiring

Does anyone know if there is an off the shelf wiring kit for a trailer that will plug into the Delica, (listed as working with another vehicle) or does it need to be a full custom wiring job?

There's definitely one out there. Sorry for not giving you the details as I didn't install it. Took my Deli to U-Haul and they installed one in less than 1/2 hour. Looked like a quick and easy install, but again I didn't do it.

the one they use isn't for any specific vehicle, it is a universal one they simply tap on to the existing wires running to the lights, the only "catch" is you need a kit that accounts for the separate brake/signal lights we have on the delica and combines them properly for the trailer. (some kits, especially the really cheap ones, only work for vehicles that already have combined brake/signal lights)

You need a "trailer light converter" It lets you splice into the marker, turn and brake lights on your (any) vehicle, and converts them into the three wire system (combined brake/turn and marker). Usually everything is included in the kit except the connectors. All you have to do is open your taillights to access everything you need. The Reese kit I bought at Can tire was $30 - just go to where all the hitch paraphernalia is. It's easy to install, the wires coming to and from the converter are labeled. Really, the hardest part is finding an elegant way to route and secure the wires. This is definitely a do it yourself job, even for a novice like me.

Hi,

The wires go from our rear lights, remove the big multi-coloured cover, then splice into the left side turn signal including ground, and run the connecting wire over to the right side by unscrewing the metal strip just inside the door (the carpet edge holder). Jay says it is simple.

To verify if you need an adaptor, before starting your install, put your turn signals on, then press your brake pedal (brick on the pedal if you have no Warm Body to help), then go look at your back lights. See if it is separate lights or same light. This test is just incase you have something wierd in your delii wiring.

Don't know the part or name. But we can look into it if needed.

But Jay installs them on boat trailers, and happy to give advice, send him a pm with your phone as he only reads not types replies.

I'm trying to wire mine up tonight with a 4-way flat end connector and HD flasher wiring kit from CDN Tire (vehicle end). Never done this before and I'm starting to think that I have the wrong kit. The instructions (if you can call them that) don't even mention the HD flasher, here's all they say:

• White - ground
  Brown - Taillights
  Yellow - Left Turn & Stop
  Green - Right Turn & Stop

We have separate lights for brakes and turn signals, but the kit I have seems to combine the turn & stop signal wires. Should I be looking for a different kit, or do I just splice the taillight/brake line to brown and the turns signals to Yellow & green? And what about this HD flasher?

Yes you are looking for a different kit. The one you need converts a 4 light system (red running/tail light and orange signal) to a two light system (red running/tail/signal). The instructions are very simple as everyone says. I easily did it myself in less than an hour.

Hmm. OK, thanks for the help, guess I'll head back to CDN Tire to for another kit tomorrow morning, or maybe Lordco seeing as is closer and they probably have a better idea of what I'd need.

OK, I went to Lordco this morning and picked up the proper wiring kit that converts the 5 wires to 4 for the trailer. Now my question is, which wire is the taillight and which is the brake? It looks like there is a green wire and a green/white strip wire running to the brake/tail light. Which is which?

EDIT: Took a chance after trying to decipher the Wiki wiring diagram. Went with green/white strip for taillights and green for brake. I guess I'll find out when I test it out on a trailer.

In case anyone is wondering whether Adam's green wire experiment was correct, I was, as I just verified on my new hitch set-up.

Now if I can just get the turn signals working....arrrgh.

Wow Adam, is it really a year since you got the trailer?? Just the other day I was thinking I should drop you a note and see if it worked out for you okay, cuz you thought it was pretty overkill for what you needed. So, how's it working out for you??

Actually I've had the trailer almost a year, it'll be a year in Aug. But oh what a 10 months it has been. It's pulled everything from bales of barely straw, to house building supplies, to logging slash, to yards of gravel, road base, drain rock and plain old fill. In the next few weeks it will be moving our all our belongings one load at a time into our new place. She's definitely a sturdy trailer. I'll have to give her some TLC and a fresh coat of paint before the fall.
