Overfilled motor oil
oops........
How bad is it to have an extra 3/8" of oil on your dipstick?

Re: Overfilled motor oil
Not super good as there is much more pressure on gaskets ect... I would drop a little out and then top it up properly.

Although not good either, too little IS better than too much. Concur, drain a bit out (spin off the drain plug, count-two-three-four, put it back in) and then top up as required. When you're near the top, only a little at a time till you get to the notch.

It would be easier and more efficient to remove your oil filter and pour the oil out of it. It is less messy, and you'll have more control of how much you are actually draining. Lubricate the rubber gasket on the oil filter with grease again before you put it back on, and screw it back just as hard as your hand can tighten it (Once it takes more than about zero effort to turn it, it only needs about 3/4 of a turn left. You really don't want to over-tighten an oil filter. And you shouldn't need more than a clean hand to tighten it. Don't use a tool, unless it is attached to a torque wrench and you are tightening it to factory specs!
