Missing air duct by air filter

well. I just pulled the cover from behind the drivers seat off to take a look at how im going to go about changing my air filter. That is when I noticed this

One of the air ducts is missing. What part of the process happens before this duct? Is it urgent that I get a new duct right away? I probably will anyways, but just wondering, it seems strange that it is missing.

on second thought, maybe this is a sign that I am to install a snorkel haha.

on another note, air filter replacement is a breeze. 2 minutes at the most, except it took me 10 because one of the brackets on the bottom housing was not holding properly when clicked down so I had to bend it to the same shape as the other with some plyers.

next its oil and fuel filter... not so easy unfortunately.

Yeah that missing hose stumped me too as mine dosn't have one either.. spoke with a Fuso mechanic and he figured thats how its suppost to be! figured it pressurized the chamber you opened behind your drivers seat and pushed air into the airfilter..... he said this was a way not to have the intake suck up debris and clog the airfilter ..... then causing a stall.

Admin update: Mitsubishi fitted a hose there from 1986-1988, then it was deleted for the reasons below. It's a liability.
As already mentioned, that hose is supposed to be missing...

The pipe at the right of the picture is the cold air feed taken from the front of the motor. It runs along the inside of the drivers wheelarch and exits as shown in the picture.

The intake pipe on the bottom is where this air is then picked up and fed through the filter and into the inlet manifold.

The reason for the gap is that is allows any heavier particles picked up through the air feed pipe to drop out before reaching the air filter. If you were to connect these two pipes, you would find your filter choked in no time at all!!

When I got my motor, the whole of this area was covered in sandy dust! I would hate to think what state the filter would have been in if it had been fed directly through the intake system!

A snorkel is one route to get around this, but be VERY careful how you direct the intake. One of the guys over here found that his got very quickly clogged with flies when it was facing forward (made the engine really struggle through lack of air!) and when he turned the snorkel head to face the other way, found he lost performance because he wasn't getting enough air flow!

I'm taking delivery of another L300 next weekend ( :D :D ) which I will be converting to a 'dedicated' off-roader! (stripped out, packed with kit, full breather and snorkel system etc...)

I'll post pics of my 'alternative' snorkel system when I get it done.....should be quite an interesting option to consider! 8)

Couldn't you face the snorkle forward, but cover the intake with a meshing? I would assume that it wouldn't restrict airflow all that much, but it would keep it clear of flies (if you wiped it down everytime you got in or out of the vehicle).

I found the same “missing hose” in mine while opening the panel underneath the driver seats and kinda panic a little bit. Now that I realize that it’s normal, I am still wandering, what if I put a piece of pantie hose and rubber band over the holes. I noticed at the base of the bottom hose, a lot of dirt, small rocks. Wander where this dirt goes... Anyone did this or something similar?

On my snorkel I am planning to run a Pre-Filter.

Basically an oiled foam filter in the head (ran this before on a Jeep).

Just wash the filter every few days (I was doing Forestry work at the time) and pop it back in. Worked great.
