Google Tirfor for the real deal

john
Those Tirfor's look amazing! Are they available locally in Canada?
If you have too much money or are suspending live loads, or over live loads, buy a new one. Acklands sell them.
If you just want a good tool to pull your van out of the ditch; Ebay has lots. Keep in mind it might be a storage problem. Cable is usually greasy...

Awesome tool, tho. Wish I kept one before I retired.

Tirfor's are a very handy tool. I bought one from Wesco Industries in Burnaby, BC (http://www.wescovan.com/ ). Image below. 4000lbs capacity, uses 11.5 mm wire. Also picked up a Campbell Chain, shackles, wire rope and straps. They have a lot of good stuff and prices are decent: http://www.wescovan.com/products.asp

I have a winch mounted to my L400. Its a 9500 lb winch. I have used a couple of time so far his summer. It is a big job to build the mounts and get everything properly placed, but for me its worth it. I have to agree that you can save a lot of money by just using a come-along, but I did not want to give up the space on the interior of my van to store it.

Could you post a few pictures of how you mounted it?

This is the final product. I had the solenoids mounted behind the front body work so it would be out of sight and it won't interfere with the airflow through the radiator. I also have the winch operations switched in the cab too. I was after a clean look that didn't reduce the angle of approach.

Wow that sure looks slick! Could you snap a picture of the mount to the frame too? What model of winch is that?
Awesome!

Yeah, that looks really, really good. I would also love to see the mounting bracket. For ease of uploading, I find Photobucket the most straightforward for me.

There are three points of attachment on each side. I used the bolt pattern from the steel tube bumper and I had a shims manufactured to fit inside the two tow loops. I hope this helps.

Front winch mount options

For that kind of money, buy a winch. That looks useless with open diffs and has a very limited angle to pull. Not to mention too much stress on your drivetrain.

Apparently they still work with open diffs? I'll try to find the link. But yes the price is a bit of a barrier for what it is.
