Oil?
Its probably the most discussed topic on any auto forum but I think it keeps coming back since the oils made by companies get phased out and new ones get introduced. Its also possible that some oils get rebranded from one country to another. So hard to pin down what oil is actually current and applicable.
I'm due for an oil change; first, and was reading up on here and other forums on type of oil's best for Deli's. I have an 1990 L300. I gathered that ash content is important as well as the oil being certified for JASO DH 1 OR Global DHD1. Seems the new oils from all the companies; specially the ones available through retailers, are made for newer diesel engine and don't comply with JASO DH 1 OR Global DHD1 standard. Few of them do comply with JASO DH 2 standard but those I believe are for newer engines. I have found the following oils to get good reviews and comply to the standards but having a hard time finding any of them in U.S. retailers.
Castrol RX SUPER

DELO 400 multigrade

Mobile Delvac MX

Anyone have any recommendation of current 15w-40 oils that would be suitable and available?

Re: Oil?
Ive been using Mobile 1 15w40 for the past year 1/2... Great oil! Great protection! Great everything!!! I've tried in the past using full synthetic but the blow by were unreal,,, even semi synthetic was giving me too much blow by... Anyway it's all in your budget... But if you want to keep your engine A1... Choose wisely!
Good luck!
Good luck!

Re: Oil?
Thanks for that. I wont be skimping on Oil. Its the least we can do for these old engines to keep them in good shape and avoid costly repairs. Are you referring to Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15w/40? Other than that the only 15w-40 from Mobil 1 seems to be fully synthetic.

Re: Oil?
I used to use LubroMoly 15W40 Semi Synthetic. For two oil changes one time I had to use Castrol 15W40 but my fuel economy went from 8.5 kilometres per litre (city) to 7.5 kilometres per litre (city). More recently I've changed over to Total Quartz 9000 5W40 Full Synth with a Nano Tech Graphene additive and the last change I put in LiquiMoly 5W40 Full Synth with the Nano Tech. I'm happy with either Total or LiquiMoly.

Re: Oil?
Great to hear as I went with the same. No luck with finding Delo, Castrol RX, etc. I did manage to find Mobile Delvac MX through a local supplier but can't seem to be able to order from them directly. Searching for retailers that could. Meanwhile I went with Delvac 1300; which although formulated for newer diesel engines seems to do well in older engines with EGR technology.ChuckBlack wrote:Mobil delco 1300 15w40
I should add that other readily available comparable oils: Delo LE, Castrol Turbo Diesel, etc. fare pretty similar to Delvac L300 with regards to specs. But I went with Mobile hoping to switch to MX when I do find it.
Did a side by side comparison of the specs for the current available 15w/40 mineral oils that are not certified for JASO DH1 and ones that are and one thing that stood out was the Ash content which are higher in ones that are certified. Newer ones are actually advertised as having a lower Ash content to reduce soot buildup. The current Ash content of Delvac l300 is 1, with MX having a 1.3. Better rated oils with JASO DH1 certifications have levels as high as 1.5 or 1.7.
From one of the links below:
"Sulfated Ash: The term sulfated ash relates to the amount of metallic elements in engine oils, which are mostly derived from the engine oil's detergent and antiwear additive chemistry. These additive packages contain multiple components based on metals such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, etc. Because a 100 percent seal between the piston rings can never be achieved, a certain amount of engine oil will enter the combustion burn."
Now I don't know if newer oils are just better formulated due to technology to handle a wider range of requirements; i.e. better protection for larger array of engines with having lower Ash content; but that is a question that seems to be debated on many forums.
I wonder if blocking out the EGR would change the requirements for the oil that is best suited for the car? Way above my paygrade...
Might be repetitive but some links I came across that might be helpful. Thanks all for the feedback.

Re: Oil?
Another interesting bit below. Although applicable depending on how much soot the engine builds up between preferred oil change intervals...
"high soot motor which requires an oil which can hold a high level of soot in suspension. use the wrong oil and this soot builds up in the galleries and the sump and then causes increased engine wear. Not an immeadiate failure rather a long term shortening of life of the engine which people dont attribute to the wrong oil, even though it is the actual cause of the problem."

Re: Oil?
Do you have the option of purchasing the Delvac MX? Would you know the difference in pricing?
