L400 injection pump rebuild

Hey All,

I'm in the midst of a trip from Nelson to the Island and Lower Mainland, and my injection pump started leaking pretty seriously along the way. I stopped in at Coombs and had a bunch of work done, but they didn't have a used pump they felt comfortable installing. So I got a used pump from them and they recommended getting it rebuilt at Northwest Fuel Injection in Surrey. I talked to Northwest, and they said it could be as much as $1,800 to have it fully rebuilt and calibrated, with a 12-month warranty. I also talked to Butch at CVI, because I read on here that he also does IP rebuilds. They charge $885 or so to do the rebuild, plus $375 to remove and install the current pump.

So, my question is this: I have a really good reference for Northwest Fuel Injection but it is super expensive to get the rebuild done there; does anyone have any experience getting an L400 injection pump rebuilt at CVI that they could share? That's where I would have it installed, because I know they do great work. But I'm wondering about the IP rebuild. I'm only on the Lower Mainland for another week or so and have to make a call on this before I head out.

Any advice or experience would be much appreciated!

CVI Rebuilt mine around eight years ago. Love is still there.

Cvi did my pajero injection pump but they dpnt calibrate it so my paj still ran way tp rich. The other place will calibrate it to solve these issues. If i had to do it again i would pay the extra...but i was having issues before the seals went.

Thanks Falco and Pajero. I was leaning toward the injection shop, and after hearing about Pajero's experience that's likely what I'll do. Particularly when you live so far away from all the parts and shops as I do, I want to make sure I don't have any problems! But hopefully it ends up being less than $1800!

Just got my official estimate back from Northwest Fuel - $1800 plus tax for a compete rebuild on a used pump I bought from Coombs. That includes calibration and a 12 month unlimited km warranty. They apparently have to order some of the parts from Singapore, which will take 2 to 4 weeks to come in.

No prob. Notice that you have a '99, which has a different, electronic pump. I mentioned that pump to them when chatting and they said no one in North America has the right equipment to calibrate it properly!

Good news is that from what I've read the Gen 2 fuel pumps are much less prone to failure than the Gen 1 pumps!

I was quoted 1600 to 1800 total. 6-800 for removal and re-installation, and around 800 for the rebuild at a diesel pump specialist here in Calgary. Does any one know how many shop hours to remove and replace? 6-8 hrs seems steep..

Im now wondering if they actually calibrate the pump as well.

The rebuild price is about the same at CVI, but I'd still get killed on the removal, shipping etc.

On my estimate NW fuel put 13 hours of labour at $121/hour. That includes the time to pull the pump apart, source parts and do otherwise do the estimate itself. Thaat price doesn't include the re/re, because I got a used pump from Coombs. So about another $400 or $500 to have the bugger installed!

how many different types of pumps are there for Delicas?
Which are the most prone to this?
Does it pay for someone to have one as a spare?

From what I understand, for the L400s there are two pumps - a manual pump on the G1 (<1997) and an electronic pump on the G2 <(>1997). The manual pump on the G1 vans is highly prone to failure, while the G2 pump is more reliable. The main difference is, the G1 manual pump can be rebuilt and recalibrated in North America - whereas the electronic one can't.

I'm new to this and this is based on what I've read. Anyone who knows more can feel free to correct me.
