U-joint part #'s??????????

Post by nxski »

I know I may be told to use the search function, and I have. I'm just looking for confirmation of what I suspect. I believe my u-joints are in need of replacement and am trying to figure out if I can drive it 120k before taking it to the mechanic (which I was planning to do before this anyway) or if I should just take it to Midas since I won't be able to get to CVI right away.

I'm getting quite a bit of vibration;
- below 2000rpm
- while accelerating
- when travelling at speeds below 50kph
- while coasting / decelerating, it's much better but still noticeable
- Over 80kph
- Between 80 and 100 it's noticeable but much better
- At idle there is no vibration, a little bit when in drive, but none in neutral

Symptoms;
- Pedal vibration
- Items on dashboard bouncing
- seat vibration

Tests:
- driveshaft has a tiny amount of play side to side
- drive shaft has a fair amount of play rotationally (don't know if this is normal or not)

Thanks

PS. From reading http://www.delica.ca/forum/bad-shake-ca ... 10977.html it sounds like I can expect to spend $350-400 to have these replaced!?

Sir this are the typical symptoms of brokeitis... Looks like the xray is shown an overworked u-joint in the frontal of your body.

I will write you a prescription for upgradecillin. Dose is L400 mg (preferably second gen) every day all Day...

Take one ASAP...

haha

but seriously good luck with fixing it. let us know what it was.

I'm going to attempt to drop it off at the Midas on 4th @ Arbutus since it's right beside my work and I don't think I can get much more driving out of the van.

I'll have then replace the u-joints (assuming they can verify that they've bit the dust), do an oil change, transmission fluid change, potentially diff fluid change, rotate and inflate tires and hopefully all will be good as new! If that sorts it all I may not have to go to CVI (I wish I could get this all done there though).

The van is being worked on right now. I was going to have the fuel filter changed, but was quoted $87 for a filter and $45 for labour, so I'll do that myself. All of the other prices were reasonable with the exception of $43 per u-joint, but I'll suck that one up for the convenience of having the work done right beside where I work.

Well, upon asking for u-joints for an 88 Montero, Midas was given one of the appropriate size and one that's too small. As the rear u-joint on the rear driveshaft was completely toast (1" of rotational play), they replaced that one. Now I have one that his a little bit of play in it in the front of the rear drive shaft and apparently my front driveshaft u-joint has play as well. So, I have a few questions (I've searched the forum but couldn't find answers)...

1. What are the part numbers for the good quality u-joints for the front of the rear driveshaft and for the front drive shaft?

2. Does the front u-joint wear even when not in 4X4?

3. I'm hoping to drive it for a couple weeks before servicing, but am only free weekends. Are there any good Delica shops open on weekends and/or have loaner vehicles?

I do still have some vibrations, but can't tell if it's from the front drive shaft (would that cause vibration?) or the unevenly worn tires I've just swapped to the front, or from the rear front u-joint. The mechanic seemed to think that because there was minimal play and because it was lateral instead of rotational, that I could get as much as 6 more months of driving. Hopefully he's correct, since I need to be driving every day for the next 2 weeks!

Let's try this again... My u-joint has already blown! I need part numbers for rear and front (4 in total) u-joints so I can pick them up tomorrow evening and have them installed Saturday. I have a lot riding on this and the search is not helping. Can someone please help with this?

I'ver had people ask me why I started a Delica Canada Facebook page when we have a forum...because Facebook is just better. Thanks to Dough Colson, I now know that the rear is 399 and the front is 398. For those searching, hopefully this helps. If you're in need of assistance, try the Facebook page and get a response in 6 minutes! :-D

If you want more of a chance of having your question answered on Facebook, send an inbox message to "Delica Canada" and Delica Canada will post your question so as to receive the most amount of exposure...

I think my frustration was showing through a bit here, it's been a very stressful few days since I'm starting a new job and driving is the only way I can get to work. The forum is a great resource, but combined with Facebook, you will have no trouble getting your questions answered. I'm picking up u-joints tomorrow to avoid paying Midas' crazy fee's. I will drop it off with them Saturday morning to have them do the work they failed to do the first time, they have agreed to give me a bit of a price break on labour for having to do it twice and as it's next to my work I won't risk losing my job to have it done. Sorry to be a bit bitter, but seriously, join the Facebook page in addition to the forum, you won't regret it!

Maybe they are, I know they're floating around because I've found them before while travelling around the states but lost track of where that information was.

Not to mention the Delica FAQ Section. According to the "Useful Links for Vehicle Part Identification Purposes" thread in Delica FAQ Section (JDM Online Catalogue) The front U-joint is MB000393 and the rear one is MB000948. According to the Lordco Cross Reference Numbers thread (just below the Useful Links thread) it's 398 & 399. Then below those threads are the "Canadian L-300 Parts List" and "Delica parts guide". Delica FAQ Section in Delica Canada Technical. Worth a look. Also consider the Technical Reference Libraries. In the Shop Manuals are often specs and numbers that will be of service. This information is just a click or two away from this thread.

Thanks for the list, obviously I wasn't looking in the right places. It will be nice to have a searchable thread now though.
