Hey guys, I'm just wondering if any of you have had alternator issues after upgrading to an aftermarket stereo, more specifically, with the addition of an amp?
The reason I ask, is because my wife had a brand new alternator put in her Pajero just over one year ago & it died the other day. The guys she brought it to specialize in alternators/starters & batteries & they said it was because the addition of an amp put too much strain on the alternator, which was only designed to supply power to the vehicles stock electrical system.
The amp she had installed was done professionally & it's only like a 600 watt amp, it's not like she's running multiple 1000 amps or anything.
It's a little worrisome, because I had a new stereo/amp setup installed as well & my amp is considerably larger wattage than hers is & I'm told the Pajero & Delica alternators are pretty much the same. Apparantley there is no aternator upgrade available either.
Any insight would be appreciated.

I run a pretty high end deck, 2 500 watt amps running a 12"... you get the picture.
Also a crap load of fog and upgraded lights.
I initially had to rebuild my alternator before this (just after I bought) and a couple years later
all is still running and sounding well.

i'll echo Firesong here - if you upgrade your sound, you may risk burning out an old alternator, but a freshly rebuilt or new alternator should not care much about the extra ~10 amps for your stereo system

Re: Upgraded stereo/alternator question...
I'm running a 1400W amp with two 15" subs, rebuilt my alternator when I bought my van 2 years ago and it's still going strong.
One thing to consider is that the L300 has 2 sizes of alternator though.

Thanks for your replies guys!
I just found an old post that says there is a 110 volt alternator available for both the L-300 & the Pajero. I'll keep this info in the back of my mind for future reference.

Upgraded stereo/alternator question...
Do you mean 110 AMP alternator? They are all regulated to output 13.4-18VDC for supply and charging.
If you're talking voltage, you're talking about a generator, and they've not put those in cars for decades.

Upgraded stereo/alternator question...
I think the two options were 75 or 80, or 90 amp. When I had mine rebuilt the shop tested it and it was around 90-92 I believe.
