Shake it baby, shake it...

Hi all

Not sure if this is a "feature" of the Delicas or a problem in mine, so here it goes...

In the last few weeks I've noticed that the steering wheel is shaking a lot when I stop the car... I can't feel it while I'm driving, but when I'm waiting at a red light or something like that, it shakes a lot... And if I step out of the car, I can also see the whole muffler system shaking like crazy... I thought something was broken or loose, but couldn't see anything wrong.

I'm not sure if this started after I had all the belts replaced, or maybe I just noticed after that because I started to drive the car more frequently...

Any ideas? Is this something I should worry about???

well I had ther same thing happpen to mine right before the tire exploded driven down the high way...might want to check your tires,but then again mine was doing it when i drove but it started the way youv discribed.

I think what you are describing is that you have a diesel engine

what's your idle speed? I know if mine is around 500rpm it shakes a lot.

ditto to what mattias said. Mine doesn't shake a lot but definitely shakes at low revs when I am in drive and when I have any revs higher than around 500rpm it smooths right out. I think this is pretty normal.

sounds like your engine mounts are tired and looking to retire. but its very hard to tell from sitting here at the laptop....

If you had your timing belt replaced you should get the injection pump timing checked and set as well since a new belt will throw off the timing a bit and cause more roughness at idle.

We have the same shaking. John at Rocky Mountain Imports looked at the steering wheel shaking and says Transmission mounts need replacing. So, We all crawled under it (party time) and looked and yes indeed very old and rubber cracky. The engine mounts looked ok though. So I now have 2 new tranny mounts, and will get our local mechanic to put on the hoist and replace (after the hell of replacing the rotors and brake pads last week, we give up on doing it ourself).
Will tell in a couple days if it worked. But, to test it, my shaking is less in neutral than in gear, so presume that means tranny is culprit. Cheers, Christine and Jay.

many times we solved similar problem by simply cleaning the injectors.

I know what you mean by stress from doing the rotors, they can be nasty to do if they dont come apart easy. but the trans mounts can be done in about 20 min (both), I just did my uncles in 20 min with a bottle jack, and I believe a 14mill socket, its probably the easiest thing to swap on a delica. well the rear push bar is easier, but you get what I mean.

Tardis did you get your mounts from Rocky mtn. imports,and what did you spend on them,i think id like to do all the mounts ,did they have engine mounts also.

I think engine idle speed should be around 650/700 rpm .

The manual says the idle speed is 700 RPM.

I have no vibration on braking or turning, but sometimes have a slight shudder when starting off. I'm planning to replace the engine and transmission mounts in the new year.

Plan on replacing engine and tranny mounts as well in the new year.
Will post suppliers and price when time to shop around - but any info from those who've done this already would be great.

Hi Rdub,
yes got the tranny mounts from John At Riocky Mountain Imports. He usually has them in stock (has most everything in stock), super prices, very helpfull. John crawled under the TardisDeli to Show Jay & I where they are, and how to see if they needed replacing (compressed crumbly rubber). Part quite small, fist size chunk of rubber attached to a metal bracket. Can't remember cost, surprisingly cheap.

We took to local tiny garage, its a simple job but we have no engine hoist at home.
Yes it helped quite a lot. Definitely a should do on the list.
Also, raised torsion bars at front so van sits level, but gives more crawl under room, party time.

Will be at the ToyRun get together this Sunday 2 December, you can compare several delicas.
