hi, your delica need a fine tuning.
as what jessie say. those are the thing you need to do.
also need to used a fuel additive that i used to reduce exhaust smoke i used this for the past 3 years now no problem at all even cold or summer weather.
do this & you wont have any problem. check also your air cleaner maybe dirty few air coming inside the engine.
that might contribute with the smoke.
if need help just call me pls..
Maybe i can help:
Cheers;
Mardy

Hey everybody,

Thank you to all of you who wrote back some encouraging feedback... I would have given the guy my opinion had I been in the Van at the time instead of my wife... that's for sure. After the fact the only remaining concern was: What will he do with the picture (or better yet: What can he do with hat picture - would this be sufficient to get the police or drivers services or whomever to order an inspection of my vehicle etc...? - but it appears from your feedback that this is not the case).

In any case: I have booked an Oil-Change (due anyway shortly), a Delica-Tune, a ECU overhaul (as I am currently turning on the plugs manually - by overriding the ECU) as well as - potentially and if necessary - a turbo-job due to some oil-leak under the Van when the engine is hot (gonna cost me another $ 1'500.00 or so....

My suspicion is that one (or maybe two - but not more than two) glow-plugs may be burnt out. The Van always starts (even when up north or Kamloops etc. in the Winter) but just with a lot of smoke... I hope that the above procedure(s) will eliminate the smoking action.

Thanks again for everybody's feedback...

Cheers, Chris

Do you have a block heater? HIGHLY recommended... Makes a HUGE improvment in ease of cold weather starts!

Skip the bear spray. You'd be charged.

Did he just walk away, get in a vehicle, enter a business? I live on the North Shore and would assist anyway possible, ie : boycotting a business etc...
Sounds like an ass, I would love for someone to do that to me and not a lone female.

Don't worry about any type of fine as the Cities in the lower mainland do not rely on third party assistance.

No doubt, but still a good thing to have in your van. This guy wasn't violent and attacking him is obviously out of line, but next time might be someone with a different agenda. In that case, do what you need to to survive and deal with legalities later.
Even in this case, I don't know all the details, but a male getting agitated towards a female can be a lot of things, not just some grumpy neighbour. IE: mental health problem, rapist, etc etc. That's extreme, but..... it's extreme. Just be ready is all I'm saying.

Erik

Actually, certain by-laws in the City Of North Vancouver are activated by complaint. You may remember an earlier thread regarding being parked on a street for more than 72 hours: Many vehicles in North Van are parked for more than 72 hours and nothing happens to them... until there is a complaint. This, I got straight from the Mayor, himself (19 March,2009:
"These guys are unbelievable"). Chris, I am wagering that the guy with the camera is the guy who phoned in the complaint back in March (pure speculation).

Hi Falco,

You are most likely correct on your speculative assumption. Apparently - my wife recalls - he was sweeping part of the sidewalk a bit further up from where she was parked. He must be some kind of over-zealous janitor or something... She knows what he looks like and I will certainly keep an eye out for that bugger....

In any case, as of tomorrow (when the Van goes down to CVI) I hope that the smokeyness will be eliminated...

Thanks again for everybody's feedback and Cheers to all Delica-Drivers,

Chris

That's always frustrating, especially when someone is being an ignorant henchman. Just tell her that people without opinions based on personal research have no souls, therefore they are free game for a slap in the mouth.

flyfishn beat me to it, but that is correct, bear spray used outside the context of what it is intended for is an offence under the criminal code. For example a kitchen knife is fine in your kitchen pointed at a meatball (unless your hubby is a meatball), but not in your hand when you are standing in front of a bank teller.

what would happen if your wife 'perceived' that the indivdual was about to assault her and she called 911?

Always find it interesting that nobody gives a frell about the smoking NAMPOS that just drove by them and nearly made their eyes bleed and lungs implode, but how concerned for the environment and everybody-else's health they become when a JDM puffs a bit under acceleration or when starting.

And the others are right: in Canada, it's a weapon if it's used as a weapon, and "that includes the cuddly teddybear with the rainbow jumper, ma'am."

Well,

The van is back from CVI and I am happy to report that the smoking-start has virtually stopped. I got a new/rebuilt ECU and the deli-tune with oil- and filter change and - what a difference...

Can't really support the supposed increase in power. Pick-up and acceleration are (as far as I can tell) exactly as before. It may be a bit more powerful uphill (doing Keith Road yesterday from Brooksbank towards Lonsdale) it felt like it had a slightly easier time making it uphill...

However, the biggest improvement is clearly the easy start... rumbles to life immediately once the clicker clicked twice and maintains a proper, steady and much smoother idle when cold - with virtually no smoke whatsoever.... GRRRRREAT... loving it...

As a quick sidenote: When I picked it up at CVI on Friday and drove off, I hit the gas on Bridgeport once the engine had reached "normal temperature" and it blew a massive trail of dirty black sooty smoke... could hardly see the headlights of the car behind me... not very different from what you see on youtube when you watch those crazy tractors pull heavy weights down a dirt track... Needless to say that I turned around and called Butch... back at CVI I did a "full throttle" start right before Butch's eyes... and (call it the demo-effect or murphy's law or whatever) I couldn't replicate the dirty smoke-thrower effect.

Butch told me that it's probably just some soot-build up and running everything through with the cleaned injectors etc.. that lead to this kind of experience... Well, it hasn't done it since and the smokey, shaky and rattly start-up with all the good vibrations appears to be a thing of the past...

Anyway... I won't be offending the neighbour anymore (at least not with smoke)...

Cheers,
Chris

80 KPH @ 3,000RPM, in third gear (Drive). If I hit the bottom of the cut doing 100 then she slows down to eighty by the time I reach the Horse Shoe Bay distance sign (say, two thirds up), at which point she shifts gear to third from overdrive. But if I am doing eighty at the bottom of the Cut then she will comfortably hold that speed all the way up, in third gear.

Mine does exactly the same as Falco's, although I usually take it out of overdrive about 1/3 of the way up and pop it back in by the upper Lynn Valley exit. If I get behind someone going slower than 80 for even a few seconds, then I'm usually only doing 75 at the top. We both have 2-1/2" exhausts (cf 2" stock).
