I personally would have gone with what both mitsubc (CVI) and jesse said wich was .25mm cold, but that is me as you said it's running fine.

well I may yet re-do it... the problem is, I asked the question, got no response, did the work, THEN got all the answers...

I do however think that this hasn't solved my real problem anyway... *sigh*

I was looking through the Mitsubishi 4D56 shop manual for "valve clearances" (the one from Delica Wiki), on page 11A-8-2 and it read:

• Standard value:
  0.03 - 0.06 mm (0.0012 - 0.0024 in.) Intake
  0.05 - 0.09 mm (0.0020 - 0.0035 in.) Exhaust
  
  Limit:
  0.10 mm (0.0039 in.) Intake
  0.15 mm (0.0059 in.) Exhaust

Now if you are taking the engine apart to this degree ~ would it not be assumed that the engine is cold?

Perhaps if you've ever wondered about me ~ I have now removed all doubt. I am just having a hard time following this thread. Humour me, please.

seems you've found yet another version that I hadn't seen before... and it lists even lower numbers than the 0.15mm that I adjusted for (and implies that you would never want more than 0.10mm intake, and 0.15mm exhaust, even though many people (and at least 1 book) say 0.25mm

It's not that far apart, you simply remove the valve cover which is the topmost part of the engine (comes off in about 1 minute or less). One manual tells you to run the engine until the coolant is at 90c before doing the adjustment, another says "cold", another says "warm"...

I guess what frustrates me the most is that there are so many different answers to what should be a simple number!

Just to say for sure.....

I was at CVI today (that's another post !!! awsome time there !! ) and i noticed that there is a sticker in the engine compartment that says .25mm intake .25mm exhaust !! A big silver sticker. right under the seat... Stuck to the bottom of the seat..........just to clearify I can't read japanese but it was clear enough what it was for.

If it is cold outside.......wait until it is warm out before you waste your time in the cold to see if i am right !!! lol's......

Green1 you are right to be frustrated !! That should be very basic and clear and i find it funny that there are so many versions of the measurement out there.!!

I didn't mean to confuse you even more... smiles. It turns out that there is a difference between "valve clearance" & "valve guide clearance" ~ which is why I was so confused about the temperature issue. When the valve guide clearance is done the engine is in pieces. I have a lot to learn.

What we really need are some "JSL" classes.

yup... I'm gonna use the fact that I can't read Japanese as the excuse... *sigh*

well I re-adjusted to 0.25mm last night... not sure whether it has made any difference, and if it has whether it was a positive of negative difference...

I also cleaned out my EGR valve...

And the vehicle still starts worse than anything I've ever driven or seen/heard of, and still smokes more than it should.

quick question.

I was checking my valve clearances yesterday and ran into a problem. I first set cyl 1 to TDC and check the required 4 valves, .002-.003in adjustments as necessary. I then rotated 360° as the book states, but when I did It looked as though the 4 remaining valves were not in the correct location. Feeler gauges confirmed that when only 2 had clearance(minimal, at .003-.004in) and the other 2 had no clearance at all. Did I miss something in the procedure?

It's 180' on the camshaft and 360' on the crankshaft.
Tdc no.1 piston=adjust valve int.exh.1 int.2 exh.3
Tdc no.4 piston=adjust valve exh.2 int.3 exh.int.4
On cold engine it's 0.006 in.On hot engine it's 0.010 in.

So start with 0.006 in. with cold engine and when it will be hot,they should be all to 0.010 in.Always double check and be sure lock nut is well tighten.
