also check your crank shaft pulley bolt.

Yesterday, I heard a low-end rattle at load and I originally thought it was an exhaust leak.

It turned out the person who did the timing didn't torque down the crank bolt enough (125 ft lbs).

The bolt worked it's way loose, and the key on the crank shaft worn a groove in the pulley which loosened it creating that 'noise'.

I really should have recorded it because I asked around and did some research.

Apparently it's a common issue if not tightened down properly.

That will lead to a completely blown engine. Good piece of rock.

Keep your ears in tune with your engine.

If something is a miss. Don't keep driving it.

If I would have driven mine another mile or another day, I may have been looking at a $4,000 engine replacement job instead of a $400 pulley replacement job.

I got really lucky.

Head's up. :M

Alright I spent quite some time 'down under' tonight, crawling underneath checking exhaust, joints, and doing greasing. Haven't done the greasing myself before, what a pain!! I think the noise I was hearing in this case was exhaust/muffer rattle, and I seem to have fixed that as I can't reproduce the noise anymore.

Glad to hear things are resolved. I have since had my u-joints replaced (not the cause of the sound) and a new turbo - which was the cause of the sound. All is quiet now.

Happy Trails

I've got a similar noice under accelaration loading. heres what I think.

On the transfer case there is a rubber bushing mount (left side of vehicle and transfer case) which is completely gone. This is allowing the tranny to move alot more than it should.

I think the noice is produced from the bolt that goes throught the rubber bushing rattling around the bushing housing. I'll be replacing this soon. I find my 4X4 shifter knob moves quite violently on warm-up but a little choke hold to 900 rpm calms the shifter knob down. Also crawling under the truck on first start up the tranny rear end is shaking alot.

This would obviously be alot cheaper than a turbo replacement if it turns out to be somebody elses problem too.

What was wrong with the turbo in order to make the sound?? bearing?impeller blade?no longer balanced?

Cheers

If you guys have the same noise as mine , a rattling through engine and gearbox going up hills or under load, but if in park you rev it and everything is sweet . I found after checking all oil levels, replacing the timing belt and all bearings . It was the flexible exhaust joint from engine pipe to muffler. If you tap it you can hear a similar noise that would sure rattle its tits off. I put a hose clamp around it to crush the wiry housing of the flex joint and also around the front muffler mount to stress out the joint a bit to tighten it up, now noise is practically gone, just need a new exhaust flex joint... good luck
