Mitsubishi Delica L400 production commenced in 1994 -- After much anticipation, the L400 arrived on Canadian Soil in 2009!

Suspension Question

Post by pj_jazzy_janz »

Hey all! I need to pick your brains. I took the family camping to Buffalo Pound last week (if you have to camp in Saskatchewan, it's actually quite lovely, right in the Qu'Appelle Valley). Had a wonderful time, but noticed a few things with the Deli:

1. The back sagged noticeably when we put our camping stuff in (rearview mirror gave a great shot of the road, but nothing much above the horizon). Granted, we are a family of 5, but there's still not that much stuff in there and none of it is super heavy.
Is this:
1) a spring issue?
2) a shock issue?
3) both?
4) something else?

2. The front end swayed and rocked like crazy on secondary (not as smooth) highways, and even into the wind on the Trans-Can.
Is this:
a) a sway bar issue?
b) a shock issue?
c) a torsion bar issue?
d) just a result of the back end sagging, therefore the front end lifting, therefore catching more wind?

I know at least one of my front shocks is leaking oil and needs replacing. I'm just trying to figure out if that will solve any of these issues and if not, what else needs replacing.

I really appreciate any expertise you are willing to share!

I think I've answered at least one of my own questions: the saggy rear end is likely the springs. Looking into some dobinsons, which are apparently the cat's pyjamas for LWBs. Waiting to hear back on a price.
I have to replace the front shocks anyway, so we'll see if that fixes the swaying, although the fact that it's swaying makes me think it may be the sway bar...

I have the saggy rear end problem too...drove that way cross Canada and back! I'll be getting the guys at Coombs to install heavy duty springs next time I'm there. I have a friend who did it and said it was a totally different van after. Graham at Coombs also said they've done like 50 of these with no complaints at all, everyone happy.

Hey shaner,
Ours is dark blue. Also, I'm actually in Winnipeg, so it's probably not me you're seeing in Regina. Sorry, man.

calcos,
Thanks for the head's up on ccautos! I've been looking into Dobinsons, from Australia. I've heard excellent things about them, too. With shipping (to Winnipeg), the difference seems to be only about $30. Does anyone have any first-hand information to help make this decision a little easier?
