Valve siezed
I'm looking for the cause of an intake valve siezing in the cyl. head? I am a mechanic,,,,,but don't know anything about diesel engines. On a gas pot about the only time this would happen is on a new, or like new valve to guide clearance and running an engine too lean.

Re: Valve siezed
HI, check your Rocky arm valve, i am pressure sure your valve rocker
arm is shot. this is the common problem with this Mitsubishi if you previuos owner dont change oil all the time.
there is a bearing that goes on the tip of the rocker arm. if those roller bearing is shot or loose. then it will create problem to your valve & shot
it off.
so jsut change one any one that is broken then your valve may work again.
check this thing first o.k.
call me if need help,
Cheers;

Re: Valve siezed
No,,, the valve siezed in the head, already taken apart and fixed. Just want to know the cause, so it can be prevented from happening again.

Re: Valve siezed
I have never seen a valve seize into a head before unless the valve is either bent or as you say the guide/stem clearance was incorrect when it was installed . Was there much carbon build up on the valve head ? Was there any evidence that the head had been off before ?? Or that the engine has had work carried out before ?? That is a very rare problem to have with one of these engines and even if a rocker arm had no oil feed to it and the roller had `eaten` into the arm itself there is no way if would cause a valve to seize . Do you have any photos of the old valve/stem that were replaced ?? I would be interested to see what they look like . Thanks , Glen

Re: Valve siezed
Was it just one intake valve that seized? Only way it would seize is lack of lube. Or if all the intake valves are either seized or bent, then cam timing went off...maybe engine went on high rpms for a second? And the valves floated (which will make the valves hit the piston top). I would check all the valves and make sure they're not bent. Check for valve to guide clearances and inspect the rocker arm shaft and arms as well and make sure the lubricating holes are all good and clean. Look for valve marks on the piston top too. Double check the cam timing after installation. Good luck.

Re: Valve siezed
or maybe its because of the loose valve adjustment & the previous owner dont even bother to change oil all the time. th roker arm maybe seized but the owner before keep using it, without knowing it.
& when you go to high speed here in canda for 110 or 120 then it give up. as you know in japan usaully there max speed is 90 kms per hour.
not like here.
so you have to compensate all the scenario what could happen why your valve is bent. usaully it wont bend if just just runs slow not on high speed. but it should be on a proper setting of the valve.
check your valve guide also if it got loose. this will also contribute to this problem.
let us know later whats the outcome.. its always nice to learn something everyday about this Delica.

Re: Valve siezed
Thanks for the great replies. I think I would come to the conclusion the the engine was over reved. It is a low milage engine, a think 60,000. My brother is not quite used to the lack of power, and driveng from Squamish to Wistler, I think thats what did it, beating it up the hills and gearing down, down the hills. I didn't do the repairs my self, but the valve was deffinatly siezed in the guide. When it did, it broke the rocker arm. I only got to see the valve and the bill. The thing about the shop that did the work that concerns me, is even though it has low milage, when they had it all apart they should have replaced the timing belt,,,,and the did not. I guess they just want to charge him the labour to do it, when it comes milage due.

Re: Valve siezed
i see, i would agree they should change the timing belt when they open it up. like i say before , as i buy Delica from japan, no matter how low mileage your delica is, if you have a chance open & check the timing belt its better to change it as the age of the vehicle. i am glad that your brother delica is working fine right now.
