Newbie from California

Post by sjsd »

Hi all. My name's Scott from San Diego, CA in the States. I've got the bug to import an L300 and thought I should join the forum to get as much information as possible. I love vans. I had an 86 Toyota Van Wagon, and now I've currently got an old 65 Chevy 1st gen Van with a camper top. I'm in love with the idea of the capability of these 4x4 vans and want to do more adventuring and camping (not to mention my wife would love it if I had working A/C when we take trips!).

I'm scouring the forums for info, but anything you can give me here would be appreciated. I've looked into Bosai Rides, Right-Drive, Amazing Auto Imports, and Silk Road for importing. Anyone with experience from any of these companies? Anyone imported a vehicle purchased from a private seller in Canada?

That's all for now. Thanks!!

Hello sjsd and welcome to Delica.ca, eh!!

I am currently in the process of importing a 1996 Starwagon (L300) through Bonsai Rides. Hoping to get it in early September. Craig from Bonsai has been great to deal with and I believe he does imports to the States. Check out my thread with pics of my Starwagon and my thoughts on Bonsai (http://www.delica.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=16651). I am sure if you did a search for Bonsai on this site you will read good reviews.

Great looking van!!

Hey all. I'm pulling the trigger on a 1990 Delica Super Exceed from Silk Road Autos. I'm planning on going up there mid October to retrieve it. I'm taking a week off to drive it down the coast back to San Diego. I'd welcome any recommendations for campsites or other places to stay on the cheap, sightseeing, or any other spots to check out along the coast. I plan on taking the 101 as much as possible. So excited for all the adventures ahead in this vehicle! Thank you!

Hey Scott

Silk Rd is just a few minutes from my place. Once you make your way to town give me a buzz and if I'm free I'll give you a hand. Maybe cause I got a '65 Ford Camper with a similar roof as your van ;)

Thanks Delicat!
I'll get ahold of you when I get into town. We're gonna be there October 19 in the afternoon. We've only got a week to get back down the coast, so we'd like to get on the road asap. I would love to meet up and maybe you can give me a few insider tips on the Delica. Didn't know you had an early Ford as well, that's awesome. Im hoping to hang on to my Chevy in addition to the new ride. Super excited!

Hey all, wanted to let you know that I made it back to San Diego from BC safe and sound. The Delica performed like a champ and didn't give us any problems the entire trip! In case anyone else in California is planning a similar trip, we stopped at the Crescent City DMV and they were able to get it registered and plated within an hour! We got pulled over once in Washington for not having plates, so we decided it’d be better to get it over with before we got to SoCal. The officer was very understanding and was actually pretty interested in the vehicle.

We took the 101 most of the way and did about 300-350 miles a day. We took the 1 through Big Sur and then back on the freeway through LA into SD. The weather was phenomenal and the delica was the perfect vehicle to tour through these areas!

Can’t wait to get some camping storage figured out and do some off road exploring in this thing!
