What fuel pump?

I've had it with Lordco specials; in 6 months two of the inexpensive Mr. Gasket inline pumps have failed, and when I tried a much more expensive inline fuel pump (don't recall the brand) that one lasted about 15 minutes. (the thick oil didn't seem to allow it to spin fast enough to keep from overheating). I just switched fuel filters to the major mondo WIX 33407 from the generic spin-on I was using before, and without a lift pump, my old IP don't can't manage pulling the oil through that huge filter. I've read where people recommend the walbro pump, but 200 clams is a bit much. Anything reliable that's less heavy on the wallet?

I've done the cheap inlines, the $150 racing pumps, and now have a $300+ WVO specific pump that has an adjustable fuel pressure screw on it...and LOVE it! The cheap ones failed and then I had to buy diesel until I got a replacement. I spent big $ on diesel while my WVO system was down. The extra beans for a quality pump is worth it. FRYBRID has a unit for $300 that has a LIFETIME warrenty on it, when running on WVO. Mine only had 3 yrs. It is now 5+ yrs old and still pures like a kitten. Looking at the big picture with WVO, spending the extra money on parts like the pump, good heat exchangers, valves, Synthentic motor oil, oil pressure guage on the fuel system so you can monitor filter life are not only worth it, but necessary in my opinion. I have saved many Thousands of dollars over the years with no engine or system issues (aside from the pump issues) and that is because I didn't go cheap. Do it right the first time and save in the end.

I hear ya, and you're probably right, but at some point the numbers don't add up. You can spend a huge amount of money on these conversions, and next thing you know you're like the guy who spent an extra 10 grand for a diesel and then brags about the great gas mileage. I mean some dudes spend over a grand just on their fuel filtering equipment. How they ever get their investment back is beyond me.

Thing is for me there are so many variables; I don't know how long I'll drive this vehicle, how long before something goes *boom* and I'll part it out, how long I'll have access to fuel oil and so on. Which makes me hesitate putting huge money upfront.

But I agree that the cheap pumps are junk, warranty or not. I can swap mine in about ten minutes now, but it's still a pain. I'm reluctant to go the way of the official conversion retailers because some of their prices are just nuts; one source lists my WIX 33407 water separating filter at over 60 bucks and I was able to get it locally for $21.00.

I'm using a jabsco diaphragm pump as a transfer pump, and it's worked flawlessly. Maybe something like that would fit the bill. They're beefy marine pumps and yet sell for under $200.00. Maybe it's time to stop looking at "fuel" pumps and get creative.

It sounds like you don't drive a lot, so I could see the costs being tricky to justify. I priced out a $2000 conversion that would have paid off in less than a year from the fuel savings (I spend a good $5000/year in fuel).

Yeah, I live downtown and Vic is a small place, and I work from home, so it's mostly local driving or bike riding. Back in the bad old days I lived in Abbotsford and went to school in downtown Vancouver. I could have used a veggie van back then, for sure, no matter how much it cost.

Yes, you need to drive to make it worth it. I bike year round in Wpg to work...but have three active kids and drive Wpg-Kelowna at least 1-2x's/year. If you don't drive long distances, it would not be worth it. From what I understand you to say about your driving practice, this would not be worth it from the financial perspective.

Here's a good proven pump that works well on WVO with a decent price (I paid $115 for mines)

Walbro FRB-22-2
12V, 8-11 psi

It comes with a screen filter and allows fuel to go through if the pump dies, good stuff!

Where did you find that? The Wakbros I've seen are nearer $200 plus shipping.
