Tire Sizes for L400

Post by Mr. Flibble »

I keep coming across conflicting information in my searches, so I thought I would ask directly:

What is the largest sized tire a L400 Delica can support *WITHOUT* any modification. No lifts, no bashing, and still have full articulation in the wheels and steering at all possible combinations?

Such a hard question to answer, but a 31" tire fits my Royal with no lift perfectly, but so much depends on if you have factory rims or aftermarket with different back spacing also, what condition your suspension is in, its 15 years old, is it sagging and needing to be freshened up? or is it perfect.... also a 30 or 31" tire is RARELY the actually 30 or 31" .... but in the 30-31" tire range should fit perfectly. what tire has your attention?

well I don't have a definitive answer for you but I have 235/75 r15 wrangler duratracks on my royal, it's lifted 3/4"-1" and still rubs a tiny bit close to full lock left or right. Now I'm told the duratracks fit larger than most so 235/75 in other tires might be just fine. If you want to ensure no rubbing at all I would recommend one size smaller than that.

I can tell you it has stock rims...

And it appears that the springs are ok...

But Starbug has not arrived yet! I am trying to decide if I should just get bigger tires right out of the gate.

235/75/15

or around a 29.5" maximum radius tire and no wider than 9.5"

If larger you'll need trimming

Will depend on wheel offset as well but with the stock rims that you have, 235/75/15 is the best size

Thanks guys!

So, I will stick with the inital tires I get out of the gate - I might modify my steel rims on my 4Runner to fit the Deli, If it is possible to modify the steel ones, and they are already powder coated... Hmm... Maybe I will just donate my steel rims to someone with an L300, and get some Tacoma rims and modify those for bigger tires.

I assume these steel rims you have are 16" like mine were, correct?

In my pic below the tires are 245/70/16 and the fronts did rub when the wheels were turned. Removing the mud flaps, bashing the body seam and triming a bit of the plastic bumper/wheel well at the bottom fixed the rubbing almost completely. (Note that Mardy fixed that saggy front suspension since the pic was taken - I have to take and upload a new one.)

225/70/16 would maybe fit without rubbing.

Tacoma/4runner rims will NOT fit on the L400.

Toyota center hub = 106mm

L400 Spacegear center hub = 108mm

You would need to have a machine shop bore out 2mm from the center holes on all Toyota rims to fit on the L400's.

I've posted this previously somewhere.

Thanks jfarsang, I actually remember you writing about getting the Tacoma rims milled down to fit on the L400, which is why I was considering getting rid of my Steel Rims on my 4Runner as they are powder coated. If they get milled, then the coating inside the rim would be gone, and they would have to be stripped and coated again. If that is the case, I thought I might as well just get some nice Tacoma rims and get those cut down instead.

Anyone run a 265 70 15? I'm thinking about it on my stock rims on a stock Royal, as the 30's I want are on back order.

I might just bit the bullet and grab some 16" rims while I'm at it.

Those are 30" tires. Just wider than the norm 30x9.5

29.5x10.5x15 may scrub on the front mud flaps
