Spare Tire Fit

Hey all,

Recently had to get a new spare tire (long story) and the new one is a little too snug. It's stock size, same size as all others, however its perhaps a little too fat. Can't seem to get it to fit. So, short of getting a different tire, or a roof basket, I was thinking of modifying the basket for the spare. Adding about 3/4 - 1" to the length the basket hangs down. Any of you think of any possible problems with this?

Have you checked to see if the tire shop over-inflated the tire, and hence made it not able to fit?

Also, maybe because it is new, the fit will be a little tight. Maybe the factory one was this way when new.

I run my tyres at 42PSI but the spare will only fit if I have it at 33PSI. Good to keep a compressor with you in the event you need to use it.

I've taken the spare down to 20psi, and its still tight. Proceeding with adding 1" to the basket.

Out of curiosity, Bessie ~ What size tyres are you running? When you say "stock size" that is 215SR15 (215/85R15). I'm using 235/75R15s, for reference to my previous post.

Fwiw I have trouble fitting my spare tire in the van. But I promise to eat better and lose a few pounds.

Sorry I didn't see this post a long time ago. I also had the issue of my 235/75/r15 tires. I modified the carrier by drilling another hole in the vertical part.
