Gasoline does not work on a Diesel

Hahaha... I remember that guy... Was he for real? I thought he was created for a lark. I guess it's possible to mistake a cold energy drink for a fuel enhancer..... I can't see myself doing that, 'though.

I don't think there is any reason to fear monger if it runs fine once drained... If you managed to get 4K out of the poor customer good for you, crappy for him, mistakes are made.

I ended up running mine on about a 50/50 mix from the top of the Hurley to Pemberton without any fatal damage and that was over 25000 kms ago already. I drained the tank and fuel filter, through in a few dollars of diesel and a couple cans of diesel conditioner and it fired right up with a little white smoke.

To be honest I got my best average fuel economy the following months and should probably get to changing that fuel filter.. Oh, and gas station that caused the hassle is now closed! booya karma's a bich.

So, moral of the story. Never let an attendant, or your wife, pump the diesel in your trucks!

However, I won't comment any further until I had a chance to try to empty, flush, bleed, refill and restart the unit later this coming weekend. One thing is for clear: Fear-mongering does not work for me - and if the unit should in fact be wrecked, I'll be sure to take it to a less gloomy, less negative and less 'up-front-$4'000-quoting-without-even-having-seen-the-damage" kinda place...

I did put .25 gas in my 89 pj. It turns out to be 75% diesel 25% gas. Ran like crap. Drove 100k put more diesel in did that 3 times. All was fine. But I did not drive it hard at all. I have in the past put gas in my old vw diesel but only 1/3 and vw operator manual was fine with that. Drain tank as much as you can. Drain fuel filter. Fill with diesel and prime the fuel filter. Start van and run it but don't rev it to hard just enough to keep or running. Run it till no more white smoke. Try not to put the van under to much load. Hope this helps.

OK... Status report...

Got a good look at Christine's van last week to see where all the relevant parts are, and also got a spare fuel filter from Christine as well... Then I took the Greyhound up to 100 Mile House Friday night (brutal... 08:55pm until 04:05am...) and got to work on the Deli at 08:00am at -10 C...

Followed all the steps as per Jesse's summary earlier in this post, installed new fuel filter and put fresh Diesel in. Then hooked up the heavy duty battery charger (it was still -6 C around 10:30am) and started cranking like there is no tomorrow...

Lots of cranking and lots of grey smoke... But the Van rumbled and caughed to life. Let it run for about 15 minutes, loaded all my gear, got in and drove all the way to Port Moody without stopping once.

All fine... At first took it really easy, but later on in the trip I sped up a bit and ran at an average of about 110 kph.

All fine, all dandy... Runs like it never stopped. Thankfully no $ 4'000 repair job...

Thanks very much to Jesse for the step by step instructions and to Christine for explaining and showing on her vehicle where everything is and detailed insight into what to do...

I call this a happy ending...

This happened to us today. Is there anyone in Victoria who might be able to give us some assistance with these steps? Or at least point me to some photos of these items/parts so I don't end up, I dunno... draining something vital, I guess. Thank you.

This happened to a buddy with an L300 last year. Almost empty and filled it up with gasoline.

Step 1.
remove the inlet (from the fuel tank) hose at the fuel filter (this will allow air in to gravity feed gas left in the line towards the tank).

Step 2.
You have a drain plug (12mm bolt) under the fuel tank. Grab a bunch of buckets and spill tray and drain all the gas until empty. Don't forget to put the drain plug back in

Step 3.
put the inlet fuel line hose back on the filter and remove the outlet hose (going to the injection pump). Then pump the primer (push button ontop of filter) until all the gas is out of the filter. *you can also remove the filter and empty it out as well.

Step 4.
Fill up the tank with diesel and then prime the system, crack the 10mm bleed screw on the fuel filter housing and pump until diesel comes out with no bubbles.

Step 5.
Get in, push the pedal to the floor and start the deli - crank ... crank ... keep cranking until the engines catches and starts running. It will be a smokeshow and rough for a min but keep your foot on the pedal. Do not let it idle down and die.

The diesel will get sucked in and you're good to go.
