Hi all,
I am installing a hotfox and turbo fyner, and I am a little bit stuck on where to get coolant from.
I notice everyone here uses the rear heater hoses, which would be great, but I don't have a rear heater. So I have a couple of questions:
1. Where do you think I should tee from, to get hot coolant from the engine area back to the turbo fyner and hotfox? Is there a trick to knowing which way it is flowing? I am guessing if it is coming out of the engine it is flowing away from the engine, right, and then into the radiator? Forgive me I don't know anything about the cooling system I just want to be sure.
2. Should I tee off of this line, twice, for the hotfox and turbo fyner? It would be a little bit simpler hose-wise to just tee off once, and then run the coolant through the filter, then the hotfox in series, and then back to the return line in one big loop. So, 2 tees instead of 4. Is this dumb? I can imagine it depriving the hotfox of heat, if the filter absorbs a lot of it. On the other hand, maybe in real life it doesn't make any difference once it is up to temperature.
I am running a looped return, to a small surge tank with the hotfox in it, and back to turbo fyner, and then vegtherm. EricN's old system.
Thanks guys!

Re: help with running coolant?
check the link in my signature to see how i teed off the front heater's lines and how i ran my filter heater in line with the WVO heat exchanger.
the heat goes to the heat exchanger first.
edit:oops that link aint in my signature

Re: help with running coolant?
Thanks for the link to the thread, it's very helpful.
Another question: In this pic, are the coolant hoses that I think I'm going to plug into. You can see that the lower one connects up to the engine. The upper hose connects to a metal pipe that curves around the back of the engine and then goes up front somewhere.
Can I tap these 2 hoses for send and return? I don't suppose it matters which is which, as I believe both TurboFyner and HotFox don't care which coolant port you use. I just want to be sure that those hoses are the ones to tee from?

those are your heater hoses, if you had rear heat those pipes would be tees, I had to remove the tees on my van to make room for the enormous heated racor filter I installed but that is another story. I never took the time to determine which was in and which was out would be nice to know though :)
Re: help with running coolant?
Sorry to be lame, but is that a 'yes'? Tee-ing into those two hoses for the WVO heat loop will work in your opinion?
I'm not sure how I could tell which is which direction... although I have a hunch, if it's going to the front heater that the hose coming out of the engine, is bringing coolant OUT of the engine? So it will 'send' hot coolant to the WVO gear??
That makes more sense to me than coolant coming FROM the heater, to the engine. But I don't know.

they both come out, or in, to the engine, one on the block and the other the head I think it would be best to use the one that is the out so you have the hottest coolant possible as when you need it hot (when it's cold out) if you tee in after it's gone through the heater core (a little radiator) with the fan blasting through it, the coolant will not be as hot, by how much I'm not sure. of course I just realized that if you tee into one line and back into the other line you don't need to know the direction of flow unless the stuff you are installing has in and out ports (and that it actually makes a difference) I need to look at my install I may well have done this when I installed and just forgot after, if not I think I will make that change.
and yes those are really the only lines you can tee into, and that is about the best spot to do it as there is room to work and room for the extra fittings and hoses.
Re: help with running coolant?
Thanks!
I'll cut into those hoses then. I know that the coolant ports don't matter on the hotfox, from finding a manual online. I'm not so sure about the turbofyner as I can't find a manual for it. But I'll try it anyway, as long as the coolant flows I'm guessing it's not critical.
