Inspection Failed. Delica side glass not DOT. Help please.

Post by clean 93 »

Hi, I am in the process of registering/inspecting my delica right now and my side glass was failed as it is not DOT approved. What can I do!? What is recommended. If there are any suggestions of ways to get it passed easier than replacing the glass. Please PM me the details. What kind of trouble could you get into by just cutting out a DOT sticker and just using it to bead blast DOT onto your glass? I need to fix this for cheap! I was also failed for having reflectors on the side rather than wired in lights. Thank you very much for your replies!

Don't even consider cheating the system, it could hunt you and us down in the long run. But you're in the right place for help... Where are you located? It'd be cheaper/safer to simply use glass from a scraper vehicle. Is it only one window?

The side windows have AS1 and AS2 on them which passes north American automotive glass laws both in the US and Canada.

Side reflectors have to be reflective (dot/as1/as2) amber on the front and red at the rear.

Your inspector is wrong and out to fail you on anything he can make up.

Reflectors are mandatory.

Illuminated side marker lights are not.

Use a different inspector.

Where are you located ?

Illuminated side marker lights are not.
actually they are mandatory in both BC and Alberta (can't speak for other provinces, but likely mandatory in most of them), the good news is they are also REALLY EASY on a delica.

The rear already has them (the tail lights wrap around just enough to be visible from the side)
And the front depends on the model, on the L300 it's a simple wiring change detailed here, on the L400 it's even easier (though not as elegant) simply replace the existing lower corner white bulb with an amber one.

As for the glass as the original poster asked, from the factory the glass is marked AS1 and AS2, good enough for every province in the country. (unless this particular delica has aftermarket glass?)

For Alberta, the Alberta inspection manual available here
For BC... I haven't found the manual online, however it has been reported multiple times on the IVOAC forum by multiple very experienced and reputable people including posts by the resident CVSE inspector (goes by fartypants on IVOAC) They state that the BC inspection manual requires them. (and nobody has ever come back with any credible counter to that)
It has also been discussed at length on this site, and on ih8mud and on the skyline web forums... and basically every forum dedicated to imports.

(on a side note, how can it be legal to make people follow laws that they have no way of getting a hold of??? (bc inspection manual is not available unless you pay money for it!)

If you have aftermarket non AS1/AS2 glass, which I've never heard of, then contact Mardy at Amazing Auto for the glass. He has quite of lot of parts vehicles to choose from.

The side glass says AS3 DOT20 on them. What does that mean?

it means that the glass is compliant. it is marked with the AS symbol and is DOT marked. the inspector was wrong, your vehicle complies. (it sounds like you have an anti-import inspector...)

Ya, it's not AS1 or 2, is it still OK?

The fact that it indicates "AS" means that it's compliant.

The Fact that is has DOT on it means it should pass and the inspector is an idiot.

Where did you have it inspected?
We need to stay clear of there or at least, we need to educate them.

Please don't tell us you went to Canadian Tire...
