Right hand drives ARE legal

Post by sebastian »

I called the Ministry of Transport first thing this morning and was assured right hand drives are not an issue of compliance. I went in to the RCMP office at noon and talked to the officer who gave me the notice. I told him that I had spoken with two individuals who both assured me right hand drives where legal. He told me that he was misinformed (misunderstood) by a Ministry of Transportation representative. He told me that the M of T wants to "crack down" on fraudulently inspected vehicles. He said I could start driving again but that the next time he spotted me on the road he would pull me over for an inspection. He did not apologise for upholding a non-existent law and told me to tear up the notice of non-compliance. All in all I'm glad to be back on the road...silly cop :P

I would have invited him outside for an inspection then and there, I know that my vehicle complies, and if he gets it out of his system maybe he'll leave you alone...

in my experience showing a police officer they are wrong in a respectful and logical way is a bad idea. I guess because I'm a punk kid that doesn't know anything.

Whats so hard about admitting you were wrong?

Hopefully you and I got the only 2 that are like this..... right?

it wasn't deli related haha, and its not severe, just a dumb experience.

I had gotten pulled over in the deli for one of the speeding lotteries - rcmp officer knew the vehicle well (out of australia). I don't have sidlelights (grey issue) and he knew it was an issue and didn't push it I could see it or someting else being an issue depending on what kind of day everyone was having.

bottom line is I guess there should be some consistency with inspections and criteria. I don't want to get caught out because some inspector was doing some dealer a favour and I also don't want to alter a vehicle more than is needed. Lot of N.A. vehicles don't have the sidelights so whats up.

I don't know where 'they' get off targeting right hand drive vehicles, irregardless of obvious mechanical soundness and valid BC inspection decal on the Delica. For example, I called transport Canada and inquired about both the high mount brake light (which wouldn't hurt for the safety benefits) and side reflectors. They informed me, in a very matter of fact manner, that neither are required for my Delica. They did say that there may, in the near future, be a requirement for side reflectors.

Snapped this picture of a buggy that had just pulled up to the mall this afternoon. The nice lady driving it told me there is no problem what so ever insuring, it is registered with the serial number of a 76 beetle.

Where are the side reflector and the high mount brake light? There was no DRL on as it drove up, also I couldn't find a BC inspection sticker on it.

I think that buggy would be a fun summer rig - just we hate being the targets!

Hi Val, you should have one of these on the windshield -

Can't tell you if it's mandatory, I just assumed you got one everytime you passed inspection.

I have my inspection sticker "stuck" to the back of my report, which is, by the way in the glove box with my insurance. Always accessible if I need to show it to anyone.

Well, i just talked with Karim of Silkroad auto.(nice guy) He tells me that none of that should be required as the vehicle is registered and you can't register without that stuff being done. He figures some cops are trying to make life difficult for us. He said that he will give me the report.
What do you guys figure?
Cheers

Inspection decals should be attached to the vehicle whenever they are issued. For most passenger type vehicles they will never see a decal. Commercial vehicles have to have a current decal at all times and go through regular inspections. Personal vehicles only ever get inspected when they are first imported and registered or if they receive a notice and order from a roadside inspection stating that they need to go through an inspection due to some defect that has been found. The decal is attached after the inspection with an expiry date but you don't have to renew this decal when it expires unless you have a commercial vehicle, school bus etc., you can just remove it at that point.

well call the person/dealer you bought it from and GET your decal, if they have vanished, find out where your van was inspected and get a decal, they should be able to get you another, even if you have to pay a few bucks like $20 to get another decal, bottom line its suposed to stay with your van at all times
