Well just returned from Seattle. Not near as many gawkers as I would have thought. I just don't think our friends down South are that observant. No offence intended.

The Valet's at the Westin loved the Deli. They actually had another one the week prior. Some off them were too nervous to drive it.

One guy at a bust stop was totally taken by the Deli. Wish I had gotten a picture of him, he was trluy amazed.

I find the Friends to the south ignore most RHD's.


I have driven Here to California, Vegas, Salt lake. and only had like one person talk to me about it..

I get more looks here in Langley.. (And theres a million RHD cars)

Im off on another Big RHD road trip so we will see how it goes this time..

I drove down to Vegas last fall, and I got tonnes of reaction. Mostly rubbernecking on the freeway though. Lots of interest when I stopped - not like crowds of people or anything - but definitely more interest than I get here. Most of the interest seemed to come from people who wanted to know how they could get one. It was always satisfying to tell them that in the US, they basically couldn't.

Hello - new member here and I live in the southern U.S. in Alabama. I have a '95 Delica and you should see the looks my wife and I get down here! People are always asking me where I got the van etc... Most U.S. military guys and gals will recognize a Deli if they've done a tour in Japan or somewhere overseas so you might get some interest from them when you cross the border. Then again it is amazing how oblivious some people are to their surroundings! Some folks just don't notice. I think a lot of people just assume it's a new model of some Volkswagon Vanagon that they've never seen before!

The US rules aren't as straight forward as the Canadian ones, they have many loopholes that can be exploited in certain situations, also the enforcment is left to the registration level, and not the import level (ie, anyone can import anything, you just can't register it) however because registration is a state responsibility (not federal) people manage to get vehicles through in some states, but not others.

In short it's not legal, however the person themselves followed the legal process correctly, just some department allowed something they shouldn't have (common in certain areas)

Just finished another trip to Mexico with a stop in Vegas (getting remarried by Elvis). Met a guy in Tucson who flipped over the deli.
He edits "overland" magazine which is a very slick and well put together quarterly magazine which he gave me a copy of. If anyone
wants to give these people any info or pictures of their equipment or trips they have recorded they might find themselves in print.

Green 1 is pretty much right. I imported the delica into the U.S. after living overseas in a position with the U.S. government. So the import process might have been a little easier than a U.S. civilian just trying to buy one abroad and ship it in. The local registration place had a little problem since we couldn't decode the japanese VIN number, but they eventually registered it. I'm sure if I lived in a major city or a state with more strict rules, esp. California with emissions, etc... they wouldn't have let me, so I took kind of a risk hoping someone would register it.

Done the trip to Seattle quite a few times and also have received general indifference with only a few minor exceptions. One fellow in Ferndale told me he was sure the Mitsubishi 2.5L diesel in the deli was also used in a variety of farm / tractor applications - and he said he worked on many of them back in the early 1980's. Not sure if he knew what he was talking about, but sure sounded interesting to me!
