I was reading a post where someone was talking about Revelstoke, and I wanted to ask more questions about this place... We might be going there for Canada day (Wed-Sun) and I would like to hear about things to do, places to go, good hikes, camping spots, etc.
The best hikes and camping are in Rogers Pass, and you make the 90km commute from there to town. Visit the Info Bureau to tailor a hike suited to your parties objectives. Next best for camping is Blanket Creek Provincial campsite 25km South of Revelstoke. I worked there in my first summer job converting the old Domke Homestead Orchard into the Park. It's a difference between dynamic and rugged, or serene and laid-back.
I will agree that Rogers Pass offers some of the best hiking - probably anywhere in this province! - but there are a crap load of awesome hikes to do right from town. Drive past the ski hill along Airport Way, and you'll come across the Mt. Cartier trail, which winds itself up through some beautiful Aspen groves and Douglas fir - cougar sightings have occured! - to an old fire lookout and the summit of one of the peaks here in Revelstoke.
There are also hiking trails up Mt.Revelstoke (a LOT of them!), more up Mt. Begbie, and then the Begbie Falls trail. Campgrounds abound...Blanket creek is quite nice, but if you head North along Hwy.23, then you will pass by the Revelstoke Dam - stop in for a tour...it's quite a sight! - and wind your way along Revelstoke Lake. There are SO MANY campgrounds within a half hour's drive - Martha Creek, Carnes, etc. - and you will have no worries finding one to your liking. Not to mention the hiking trails that shoot up everywhere, forest roads that abound all the way up to Mica where most of us locals drive and just camp somewhere on the lake.
You will have no problems finding a place to stay, nor a worry finding things to do...
Feel free to give me a shout when you get into town, and we can meet up at the Modern (our local cafe, and also the social hub of town!) for a coffee...i will help out any way i can.
