DOT Compliant Tires?

Post by sean »

Just wondering how many people did not have DOT compliant Tires on their Delica when it arrived off the boat.

I have been told that I should look into having a set to put on just in case mine are not compliant when I get my inspection. Hard to do if I do not know the size of the rims. My Delica has snow tires on it at the moment. Not really needed in Courtenay but will be nice to have in the winter going up to Mt. Washington.

Just curious how much energy I should put into looking if nobody here ever had this problem when their Delica arrived.

Thanks,
Sean

Of all the delica's we have imported it's been a 50/50 chance of having DOT compliant tires, invariably snow tires have NOT been DOT compliant, and I would be reluctant to run them in summer, as they are noisy and don't handle well at all.

If you did want a different set... i think adrock has a set for sale.. wheels and tires. Otherwise the standard size wheels that come on Delicas seem to be 6" wide r15s... and you can tread them with tires as big as 235/75/r15's without any need of modification.

Mine needed dot tires and a friend got his in and the tires were dot but pretty much worn out. I put it in another post but walmart has goodyear wrangler tires for 88$ per tire mounted and balanced 235/75/15 perfect size tire for the delica

Reply to Sean,

I picked up 2 Delicas today, both 92's, both with similar km's. One had sweet goodyear wranglers... almost new and they are dot. The other had tires which could pass for glazed donuts, all cracked on the sidewall and not dot, even though you would have changed them anyway.

You just never know what you are gonna get.

So I found out which tires are on my Delica, they are Yokohama I/T Geolander
http://www.yokohamatire.com/pdf/geoit.pdf
I realize they are not the tires I want to run at this time of year but want to look around for the right ones and not rush into a purchase.

These are available in North America. Does that mean that the Asian version have the same specs and will be compliant? Just preparing just in case I need to get some new ones right away to drive it away.
They are 215/80r15.

The magic DOT stamp will dictate wether your tires will pass inspection, also depending on how long the vehicle has been sitting can make it obvious that you will have to replace them due cracking and general exposure to the elements. more times than not though, its a good bet to replace the rubber. I just put some LT235/75 15 Nokian Vativas on my Super Exceed, plus new shocks, bushings, alignment and a good lube of the chassis... it drives like a dream.

hope this helps

If the tires are also sold here in NA it be safe to say they'll have DOT on the rubber. The BF AT's that mine came with are DOT, but the snow tires our first one came with wore really fast in dry weather. Those one's were one's my tire shop had never seen, and the were Bridgestone's.

Sid we did exactly the same two years ago, including the same Nokian's plus cranking up the torsion bars, and it still runs like a dream.

Cheers,
Kev

tires don't necessarily need the DOT stamp, however they DO need to have the load ratings stamped on them, many foreign tires don't have this.

So the tires that arrived on my Delica do not have DOT stamped on them. :( . So I am in the market.

Reading all the post about tires gives me a good idea about what size. I think I will go with 30x9.5/15. The inspection place recommends Hercules brand that is a tread copy of Toyo Open Country A/T. $150 each plus mounting etc. Is it ok to go with a tire brand I have never heard of? I read about them and they make tires for many different companies. Is there quality issues with brands like this?
Is $150 a fair price?

Also, does anyone know if I get to keep the non DOT tires or are they "confiscated"? They are brand new winter tires.
Thanks
Sean

Getting new rubber would be a good idea if your rig came with winter tires, they'd wear like a pink pencil erasers in the summer. Several dealers have commented that you don't have to have DOT, just pressure ratings on the tire markings. These dealers take many steps to ensure compliance of there Deli's for sale, and keep the existing rubber if it's in great shape and has a pressure rating - but no DOT.

$150 sounds OK, think I was charged $240 for one 30' BFG AT.

Alright lets see some pictures. :)

Hey, i just put those Hurcules LT on a fresh Delica I am having serviced, and they look good to me. apparantley they are made by Cooper Tire, and although they arent a big name like Michelin or Toyo or BFG, they look to be just fine for a Delica. Price is right too.

thats my $0.02
