Where can I pump cheap Diesel in the lower mainland?

Post by impalator »

Altough gas prices have dropped quite a bit, I find that Diesel is still quite up there...

For example I saw regular gas yesterday in North Van at 1.06 and Diesel at 1.27 - that is a whopping 21 cents or almost 20% more.

Now I know that the diesel is taxed higher than gas - but this difference is still inadequate in my opinion.

I have also seen instances where (in the interior, Kamloops or 100 Mile House etc.) Diesel was sold on par with gas - or even cheaper... Weird...

Does anybody have any tips about "cheap" Diesel stations in and around Vancouver?

Also, did Harper not indicate that he was going to cut Diesel taxes if he got elected? I am by no means a Harper supporter - but it would be nice if in the aftermath at least Diesel got a bit cheaper?

Anyway... thanks for any inputs and recommendations...

the price of oil, the price of gasoline, and the price of diesel are not tied to each other, as i understand...
there are "market forces" that drive fuel prices. for example when home heating oil is demanded because its winter, the price of diesel will go up because the supply is shorter. i also understand that gasoline and diesel are pumped through the same pipelines. when gas is being pumped, diesel prices stay high because its based on how much diesel is in reserve until the next big load comes through the pipeline

There's just no good answer on this, I'm afraid. Diesel is as expensive as premium gas. Now you know why the truckers have been screaming - their big rigs use a lot more diesel than our Delicas do. I note, though, that last summer when gas spiked to $1.51 a litre, diesel was steady at about $1.50 a litre. Not much of a bargain, I know. :-(

There is some grumbling about the cost of developing and producing ultra-low sulfur diesel, but I can't see it being that much. Different demand, different tax structure, and we always get gouged in B.C. anyway.

I live in Aldergrove and fuel prices are better here than any other area ive seen ,gas is 99.9 and diesel is 112.9 I have noticed lately that diesel goes from 112.9 to 117.9 in the same day which is bullsh*t ,but thats gas companies for ya. Diesel can be 117.9 in the morning and earlly evening while trafic is higher ,than will drop to 112.9 after around 8pm ,if thats not gouging than im not sure what is ,but its morely wrong and therfore gas companies feed of there lack of morals.

I don't like getting gouged or treated like a chump by the greedy oil corps. either, but I seldom pay attention to the cost at the pumps. When we need fuel we get it and it costs what it costs. I am very grateful to have the resources to own and run a vehicle in the first place. Look at it in a world and historical perspective. Driving the way we do here is a privalige rather than a right, for sure. We are really, really lucky. Even at the current prices fuel is cheap when you consider what you get for it - a ton of gear at 100kph, warm and dry and with tunes?! WOW - sure beats walkin'! And if you think fuel is too expensive here in Canada, ask some of our UK members to tell you what they pay :o Ouch!

The economics in Alberta are also having an influence. A couple of plants went down (Suncor first) and diesel was so scarce that it has been rationed to large consumers like gravel crushing operations and agriculture. One of the aggregrate plants (Tri-Dave) working on the TCH twinning in Banff was shut down almost all of last week because they could not get diesel delivered to the site at Pit 69 near Lake Louise, where they require 10,000l per day. A number of companies started to look in B.C. for supply and started trucking from there. Okanagan Aggregates seemed to be OK at the Mannix Pit because they had a preexsiting contract with Petro Can. At one point, even CP Rail was told by Petro Can they they may be subject to rationing.

This dynamic has had a significant influence on the prices.

Also something that suprised me. Last week I was told by one of the managers from the aggregate crusing plants that industrial diesel that is purchased in bulk and used to run the rock trucks, loaders, Cat generators, etc., is the same as the regular diesel we used to use: it is not low sulphur. In other words, if you could get your hands on it, you'd have the old fashioned diesel our Deli's love so much. If these guys were planning on being here longer, I'd probably be talking to them about sourcing my diesel at the aggregate pit instead of the gas station.

Good morning,

Thanks for your replies... I am not complaining about Diesel prices per se (shouldn't have bought a Diesel to start with - if that were the case).

Was just wondering if anybody knew of a gas station or areas (such as Aldergrove) that are cheaper. Doesn't mean that I will drive out to Aldergrove from North Vancouver (to burn the savings) but when headed through the Valley, it may be worthwile to plan a quick pit-stop there.

Anyway... have a good day

Gonna have to seal the "Underheadlamp-Area" of my Van soon as in the last few days, the footwells have turned into mini-versions of the Vancouver Aquarium....

Something else you might consider to lower your fuel costs a bit is blending a little WVO straight into the diesel. Doesn't work so great when it's really cold out so you have to use less, but in the summer you can blend up to 50%. This time of year we fill up, run down 5 liters or so and then top up with WVO. Not much, but it does add up. I suppose when (if... :? ) we get that sustained sub-freezing weather like last winter we'll go back to straight diesel. I still hope to eventually get a Plantdrive system installed and do the full time veggie burn, but plan to keep blending until then. Oh, and for possibly slightly cheaper diesel, depending on what you use your bus for, you may be able to get a commercial card-lock account. We use ours for our gardening business so were able to get an account with our local Columbia fuels. Again, it's not much but it saves a few cents and we have the added connivence of a once a month fuel payment - :? Hope I didn't sound to much the curmudgeon in that previous post... :-) :M :-D

Hey,

I fill up at the Shell at Boundary & Marine - it sells only diesel and I find it's frequently 10c per litre cheaper than other gas stations in Vancouver. (I filled up last week for $1.09 cash). You don't get air miles but at that price, who cares.

I was in cab last week and the driver told me that gas (not sure about diesel) is always cheaper from 17:00-20:00. I have been looking and he was right. It is $.04-.05 cheaper at that time of the day, again, for gasoline. I'll make a note of the diesel and update once I can confirm about the diesel.

And yeah, coming from Sweden I concur with the above statement that: I'm content with the price of diesel here in Canada.

The price of diesel is related to the price of gasoline as diesel is a "by product" of gasoline. What we are experiencing here is what we call in the trades as "gouging". In the US when asked by the American government to the oil corporations as to why the high prices, the corporations replied "because we can". I agree with you impalator, let's see Harper own up to his promise.

In the meantime I go to Mohawk on Third Street, they have a high quality diesel (Diesel Max) which works out cheaper in the long run as I get better mileage with it. These vehicles are used to the fuel in Japan, their "regular" is 94% octane and their diesel also has an high cetane number. If you are going east, take the Number Seven (Lougheed) and once you get past Mission City the prices get lower. North of Harrison Mills on the Chehalis #5 reservation is a service station that is usually cheap. Turn left at the Sasquatch Inn on Morris Valley Road (as if you were going up the Weaver Creek Road in the West Harrison FSR system) to get there. The detour is roughly 11 kilometres.

The grocery Superstore at Renfrew and Rupert (near Boundary Road freeway exit on the Burnaby / Vancouver border). Always the cheapest price, as they give 6.5 cents per litre in coupon to use in the grocery store. So go in and buy a 4 litre of milk and you're done. Has been 114.9 for a while now. The same grocery store in North Van only has gas. The store in Port Coquitlam has diesel, same price. Used there diesel for a year now, just fine. See lots of couriers and delivery trucks filling up there. And sometimes the flier has a coupon if you buy $200.00 of groceries or household stuff (like outdoor stuff, kids toys) get .25 cents a litre off fuel (plus the 6.5 cents a litre coupon).

Hi all, for what it's worth I found a .csv (microsoft excel (The file is clean I have scanned with multiple virus scanners)) file online that lists of all of the service stations in BC that sell diesel. I'm not sure how up to date and accurate it is so please take it with a grain of salt. I am not able to post the file to the forum so if you would like a copy please pm me.
The file is originally for use with tomtom so the lat and long of the station locations are listed in the file as well.

:-)
